Yes, this is an excellent representation of why Kaplan is ineffective and sterile.
I agree Kaplan theology alone is insufficient..that is why in "Jewish Humanianism.....we combine Kaplan with Jewish Humanism (atheism), Jewish agnosticism, and other emerging concepts...:)

So you have a varying array of ineffective and sterile concepts. I'm sure that will be better.

:D.....I will agree, Kaplan was a bit boring..after all, that's why I am a reform Jew.....a theist......and we like the juicier parts of Torah.....indeed one of my favorite Torah stories is the one where King David picked up Bathsheba.....this story has all my favorite parts......sex....ethics....what could be better...?....:)

Btw...another favorite is when Judah meets up with a prostitute...who turns out to be Tamar...we rJ's love surprises...:D

And lets not forget the Pharoh's wife and Joseph and the Pharoh and Sarah...lots of fun stories...:D

Can you list your favorite Torah and Talmud stories that bring together sex and ethics ?? They can be Midrash as well......actually, now that I think about it....we should list all our favorite Torah and Talmud stories.....I bet a few will rise right to the top !!!

In fact, we don't only spice up our stories with sex...sometimes we use both alcohol and sex...remember Noah...:D

Forget about Talmud and Torah. What is really important is who makes the best latkes. We need a competition to decide if orthodox, conservative, reform etc Jews have the best recipe. A blind tasting is of course in order which a representative from each present on the panel (with a physician standing by just in case - some mother's son, the doctor).

This post was inspired by a big spread on latkes in my paper today.

Sunny...you have indeed embraced the spirit of Avi's thread !!!!

Thank you for your suggestion....in fact I think we might have to propose a "Cultural Judaism" DIR...which would be placed beside the forthcoming Karaite DIR !! :D

Topic: The Meaning of Hanukah

While the Orthodox and Conservative (read cultural) Jews celebrate how much they love latkes during Hanukah...I thought we ignorant, secular, reform Jews, might take a moment to reflect on the meaning of Hanukkah....any takers ??

Ok, I'll start....growing up in the US...we are taught that Hanukah is a minor holiday....do you believe this is true ??

Also...what is the main message of Hanukah...is it about being the "Festival of Lights" ?

What is the significance of the Greeks or Syrian-Greeks in Hanukah ?

Does Hanukah have any message about assimilation ?

Why do Jews so strongly resist assimilation ? Do reform Jews assimilate more easily ?

If the period of Hanukah is associated with Greek or Hellenistic influence....is this really less important than the Roman influence which followed ?

Did everyone light their first candle tonight ?? :D

These and other questions about the Holiday Season,,,will be answered by none other than your friend......."Avi" !!....Stay tuned...:D

Lit the candles last night, and we're gonna have our family latke dinner tonight.

Darn, I just drooled all over my keyboard!

Happy Hanukkah to all! :)

Due to the circumstances set forth elsewhere on the forum, we have been reduced to using a mix this year. Below average, but passable, if only barely. Still, you don't want to watch a right handed woman trying to make latkes left handed.

(As an aside, a new x-ray was taken. No sign of healing yet, but the doctor wants to play it conservatively for another 2 weeks and take another picture then.)

And the reason you're not making the latkes is because...? Aren't you her right-hand man? [buddity-bump :D]

Anyhow, I hope she does heal quickly, so please us know how it's going.

Rabbio...I am afraid I am actually going to have to agree with Metis on this....which means your entire...online...reform Congregation (Metis and me...:D)....wants to see a picture of you...in the kitchen...peeling those potatoes....:D...and, of course, best to Mrs. Rabbio !!

Since I can't post in the Judaism DIR, maybe someone will note and repost this because it's interesting at least to me. Although perhaps it already was discussed there since it's been available for a couple of years.

A friend told me this documentary on the Ba'al Shem Tov was on TV but I was not free to watch it when it aired although I will soon since I have a recording.

A Fire in the ForestThe Life and Legacy of the Ba’al Shem Tov is the web site and has a couple of video segments that are themselves interesting.

Okay....if I have to....I will watch it...:D...btw, why can't you post in the DIR ???....in my case it's because they are threatened...because I embody the principles of Judaism...more than the Orthodox and Conservative squatters in the DIR...:D

I do not identify my religion using the words "Judaism", "Jew" or "Jewish" in some form or manner.
