The only time I might get beaten is when I play chess with my husband. He wins mostly every time. So...we don't play chess much anymore.

You should not give up.
Try setting the board in various manner.
say.....rooks in front of the pawns for the start.
Or...move all of the pawns forward one position at setup.
There are simple exercises....checkmate the king with three pieces....
nothing else on the board.
Winning is nothing more than knowing the mechanics of the board.
(though some people are really mechanical.)
Note this technique........stab....stab.....stab.....
