A WOMAN of Pakistani origins has been killed, and her daughter gravely injured in Italy following a family row over an arranged marriage earlier this month.

The daughter, 20-year-old Nosheen Butt, was hospitalised with head injuries and a broken arm after her 19-year-old brother beat her with a stick in the courtyard of their building in Novi, near the northern city of Modena.

According to Modena prosecutors&#8217; initial findings, the father Ahmad Khan Butt, a 53-year-old construction worker, threw his wife to the ground and beat her with a brick while the brother Umair attacked his sister. The father had been in Italy less that 10 years and was the owner of the local mosque.

So what do you think is the best way to respond to this? I mean apart from the obvious step of putting these two men down.

Arranged Marriages should be banned worldwide in whatever religion or culture its practiced,this should be obvious to anyone IMO

I was criticizing the beliefs and practices, not the believers and practitioners, except for those who commit or condone violence, abuse and oppression (and it appears that a sizable chunk does).

I see, I was wrong to assume you were talking about Muslims and not the belief itself.

I don't know whether or not Mohammed reputedly consummated an arranged marriage with a prepubescent girl according to Islam, but if so that's not a great standard to be set for the religion. I can't judge though without more knowledge.

I'm not a fan of religion, but many of my family and friends are religious. I feel that people should be free to believe and practice as they please so long as they don't violate the rights of others in the process. It's when religion is imposed upon others or used as an excuse to oppress or victimize innocent people that I have a problem with it. But I'm not going to pretend that these faiths are "beautiful" or that they should be revered and respected.

Aisha was 6 when she was wedded to Muhammad, who as 54 at the time and the marriage was "consummated" when she was 9. Only Muslims who are embarrassed by Buhkari's account question its authenticity. Up until the very recently, Muslims didn't find anything wrong with this whatsoever. It is conceivable that this very post will spark a flood of outrage from the resident Muslims.

This issue has been kicked around here for YEARS. There are basically 3 response:
1. Its a lie it never happened. The Sunni's made it all up
2. Muhammad teated her more like his daughter and never actually had sex with her. She was his serving girl.

I'm afraid you will be surprised that even the most civilized and cultured societies have done and are doing much more terrible things. these people work on codes you simply cannot understand, so there is no point in going out of your way about it.
