Better actor Johnny Depp or Leo dicaprio?

My instinct is, like everyone else, to say Depp though I think he has the advantage of playing some very "visual" roles that naturally get more mainstream attention. He has demonstrated more range, though how much that is DiCaprio getting a little typecast rather than what he'd actually be capable of given the opportunity I don't we'll ever know.

I do know they're both infinitely better actors than I could ever be.

I'd say Leonardo DiCaprio is the better actor, although they are both excellent, albeit different types of actors.

I think they're both very good actors. (Cute, too.)

Depp was perfect as Jack Sparrow, but has also had a large number of diverse roles. I wasn't a big fan of his Willy Wonka portrayal compared to Gene Wilder, though.

DiCaprio is being kind of underestimated in here, imo. He did the basic good acting in movies Titanic as kind of a "pretty boy", but then got into rougher roles in Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, and the Departed (where I think he did particularly well). He did a multitude of other roles as well. He has played basic love interests (Titanic), eccentric people (Catch Me if you Can, The Aviator), and rougher roles (Departed, the others, etc).

For those saying that DiCaprio got better over time, one of his earlier roles in a movie with Johnny Depp (What's Eating Gilbert Grape?), was one of his most well-acted roles. He played Johnny Depp's younger, mentally challenged brother, and he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor even though he was rather young at under 20. Most of that praise of that movie went to him, and Depp just did rather well at a fairly normal character.

Titanic!!!!!!!!!

Ooh yeah. One of my favorite romantic movies. I can't believe the epicness.

Yet, I vote for Johnny Depp as the better actor. Liked him in Sweeney Todd, ES, Public Enemies (acting, not the movie so much), Secret Window, first POTC, and more.

Who's a better actor? Depp or Christian Bale? I gotta think about that one.

Dicaprio is good but films like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas swing it in favour of Depp.

I think they're both "indie" film actors who have been caught up in big box-office roles. Depp seems to be the go-to guy for what will pass as fringe in Hollywood, and DiCaprio seems to be the go-to guy for what will pass as glamorous in Hollywood. I think both assumptions are misleading, though.

It's difficult to honestly pin down who really is the better actor, as both have truly impressive resumes with a variety of roles that show their range in acting. Plus, they're both still young with years ahead of them as they enjoy their prime.

The Quick and the Dead, Gilbert Grape, Marvin's Room, The Departed, Catch Me If You Can....and I SO want to see The Great Gatsby....I don't think it's a slam dunk for Johnny Depp. But personally, I give Depp the nod for now. And it's ONLY because he made the role of Captain Jack Sparrow that solidified the POTC franchise. So, skill-wise it's a dead-heat. Box-office draw, though, I think goes to Depp.

In time, though, if Leo keeps this up, he's bound to pass up Depp, given his talents in narration, and especially if he gets over himself and takes up directing. I would then rank him right up there with the modern-day Orson Welles, given his potential in the film industry.
