Cant have it both ways

Hello everyone! Im new to this forum. I came here in search of people who could explain to me why they believe in god/gods. And possibly sway me. If i could be swayed to a religion that would be incredible.

To me it is completely ridiculous to blindly follow something just because someone 2000 years ago said, "yes this is the right way to live"

And the idea of science and religion going hand in hand is also completely asinine. You cant have it both ways. You cant pick and choose which parts of the bible you like and which ones you dont, it doesnt work like that.

Religons were created in a time when we didnt have good scientific procedure and religion was a convenient way to answer alot of the questions that couldnt be answered back then cause there was no scientific process.

It is a proven fact that people are afraid of the unknown. Religion seems to be an extremely convenient way of answering the question of what happens to us after death. Its also an easy way to control the masses. If you tell people that if they dont abide by these rules, which by all means are man made rules, then they are going to burn for all eternity in hell.

Another absolutely ridiculous belief is the belief in the 7 deadly sins. These are almost impossible for a person NOT to feel in almost every day life. It was a way for the church to keep people feeling ashamed and to keep them down. I ask religious people questions some times to see if they contradict themselves in there beliefs. Why would you believe in christianity if you are commiting sins? You are knowingly condemming yourself to hell by doing this.

Like there are countless numbers of "christian" girls these day who lie, cheat, steal, have sex before marriage, and all sorts of things, but then claim to be christian. Thats completely retarded.

It just seems to me that religion was basically science back then, and now that we have real science, its time for people to stop believeing in fairy tales.

Another thing i have a big problem with is when religious people start talking bad about evolution. If you do not believe in evolution, then you believe that we are exactly the same now as we were in the beginning of time. Which is absolutely not true, we have fossil evidence of early people the PROVES we have changed since then. Just because we dont have ONE skeleton to complete the chain doesnt mean a damn thing.

I also have another question for all the Christians. Christianity is a relatively new religion. So what happened to the people for all the thousands of years before christianity?

Welcome to the RF. Come back after your lobotomy if you want to be swayed toward religion. You'll be much easier to persuade.

And, bit of advice, don't try to be rational or logical in the RF. It will only get people to call you arrogant and mean.

Good luck.

Hello and welcome. Be aware that battle-hammer swinging anti-religionists are a dime a dozen in here, so if you want to distinguish yourself from the atheist hoi polloi, it is better to speak from the heart about what you actually DO believe, rather than simply attack others for their beliefs.

Unless, of course, their beliefs are ridiculous. ;)

Hello there

As you have said people are afraid of the unknown. Science itself is the study of the unknown in order to make new discoveries. Science can also become a means to control the masses. What chaos there would be today if there were no more cell phones or power plants or fridges or computers. These things control the masses since they have become addicted to these technologies birthed by science. Science itself is ruled by the rules of the universe. How then is religion different if it too has a set of rules. There are many things that science cannot account for but that is reasonable to believe in. Science cannot prove maths and logic, it cannot prove what is beautiful, it cannot prove what is right or wrong.

If I have to decide which one, religion or science, controls the masses, I would say science technology by far has the upper hand.

Absolutely. Since the introduction of cell phones, humanity has become a mindless body being controlled by the nefarious cell phone companies and doing their bidding. These same evil people have wickedly introduced a means of keeping food fresh using wicked refrigerators (mine is a Transformer named Omnivoritron) so that we don't have hunt for our food every day which is why we are all so fat. Villains! And the COMPUTER! I could tell you horror stories about how our computer forces us to languish before it and continually return to the temple of the Internet so that we must interact with other human beings all the while the computers are learning how to modify our behaviors and control humanity. It's horrible!

And how did you come by this conclusion? Is there evidence to support your claim? If there is, the mere fact that you are using evidence indicates that you are taking a scientific approach and therefore you too are a mind-numbed robot laboring under scientific delusions. If not, what you state is merely an opinion and opinions are as valuable as navel lint.

I am sure you meant science and a literalistic interpretation of the Abrahamic god and its reveled revelations.:D
One can follow the overall meaning, without succumbing to literalistic dogma.

Religion in and of itself is fine as long as the followers accept the truths found in the natural world.
Many followers of the numerous religions worldwide do not attempt to combine the spiritual with the physical world. And many personal spiritual beliefs reconcile with naturalistic science quite well.
Some of the most knowledgeable, reasonable and open minded people on this forum embrace a spiritual belief.
Conversely, many of the most ignorant, self-righteous and deluded people here also hold deep spiritual beliefs.
So generalization just doesn't work many times.:)
It is all in the reasonableness of the individual, Atheist, Agnostic, Theist, Polytheist, etc..

Please, tell us how it works.

We've been waiting for someone who knows how it works to show up and straighten us all out.

see, this attitude seems to me to be another one of those that makes a person knowingly condemn themselves to the hell they believe in.

If you believe in christianity, then you believe that god is all powerful and all knowing, so therefore, shunning ANY part of the bible is blasphemous, correct? Therefore youd be condemning yourself

At least this time you prefaced your statement with "seems to me". Makes all of the assumptions in your post slightly less annoying.

Although I've never seen anything in the Bible that said "Humor the misguided and misinformed, lest yea be cast into the pit". Maybe your version is different from mine.

If you believe in christianity, then you believe that god is all powerful and all knowing, so therefore, shunning ANY part of the bible is blasphemous, correct?

You're speaking in absolutes; there's a lot of middle ground between reverencing something on the one hand and "shunning it" on the other.

You're also assuming that every Christian believes the Bible to be the infallible word of God, they don't.

You also, all of a sudden, seem to be equating any sort of theism with Christianity. Where did that come from?

Therefore youd be condemning yourself

Maybe, if I were a Christian, and that by the narrow definition of the term that you seem to be using.

Namaste and welcome to the forums!

Seems to me like you're confusing religion with superstition, a very common and understandable mistake.

The word "religion" comes from a word that means "union." Therefore, the point of religion is to "unite" with... either God or other people.

I'd also like to point out that the Buddha taught that speculation about the Mystery is a waste of time: very wise advice that, sadly, few follow.

Religions were not originally meant to control the masses, but unfortunately, Constantine converted to Christianity. (Bittersweet; on one hand, Christians are no longer persecuted, on the other hand, they become the persecutors.) That, of course, wasn't the first time; even in the religion I follow, Hinduism, had a time (and even still in some places) when it was controlled by the priests. (That's what the Buddha primarily objected to).

But if you're hoping someone will try to convert you, you've come to the wrong place; proselytizing is not allowed here.

I also have another question for all the Christians. Christianity is a relatively new religion. So what happened to the people for all the thousands of years before christianity?

We're still around. :D

You can't get a job if you don't have a phone. You can't get some jobs if you don't know how to use a computer.

Though I would hardly say that technologies control the masses. But we have become addicted to it.

Personally, I fail to see how anyone can believe in evolution and not accept that God exists in space-time. Mankind, the most high in the evolution or growth of the singularity of origin may not be God, but he is the lord of creatures and the prototype of the Lord of spirits, and perhaps God (The Son of Man) has not yet evolved in our time, but as mankind is not the end of the eternal process of evolution, He does exist in our future, and is able to visit, not only our time period, but even to exist in the very beginning from which he originated.

That which was in the beginning as a singularity, remains that singularity that we see as the living Cosmos, with all the intelligenge that it has evolved within that living eternal and boundless being.
