If an RFer told you in advance that he or she was coming to the city or town where you live, would you want to meet him? Let's say he/she was in town for a five-hour layover and had some time to kill, or was here for two or three days. Would you want him to contact you in advance so you could at least meet and have lunch or, if there was time, show him around a bit. Or are your online acquaintances meant to be anonymous? If you could meet three RFers in person, who would they be?

i will like t o meet som people.i am here i n Clearwater and Ocala florida then go home in Outremont when school finish. :)

I can think of a number of people on here who I'd love to meet, and a few who I'd like to get advance warning of so that I could leave town before they showed up.

Done here.

There are probably 40 or so currently-active members or so I'd really like to meet, and probably a similar number whom I would decline to meet. The rest, I'd be willing to meet, but probably wouldn't go to a lot of trouble to meet them.

That's a very difficult question; it would be impossible to choose. I thought the question was so interesting, though, that I made a list and then used a random number generator to pick three. (Can you say "OCD"?) It picked Angellous, Mball, and Jay.

The only member I've actually met is standing_alone, who hasn't logged in for nearly a year. It was well worth the trip.

Three? I hate to play favorites, but I'll go for Storm, Katzpur, and atotalstranger. Of course, now I'm going to kick myself for doing that off of the top of my head, and not putting more thought into it....

I'd probably want to get to know people on here on a more personal level before I would decide to meet up, but there are certainly some people I think it would be interesting to meet.

FFH, anyone?

Smoke,

If I'm on your short list, would you and John mind letting me know if you're ever in Salt Lake City to do genealogy?

LOL! Notice I didn't name three myself. Every time I do, I end up wishing I hadn't. But seeing I'm on your list, promise me that if you ever plan to be in Salt Lake, you'll let me know so we can get together.

Katzpur, I loved your pics of the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Very colorful. It was like Disney goes religious.

Er... that's supposed to be complimentary, but I'm not sure if it is.

It would be a church. Yes, there is an enormous difference between a church and a temple. Churches are where we hold our regular Sunday worship services, and they are open to anyone, LDS or otherwise. There are thousands of LDS churches throughout the world, but over about 120 or so temples. Temples are where we perform sacred ordinances that have eternal significance. Only members of the Church who are living up to a specific standard are given the opportunity to participate in temple worship. (Prior to when a new temple is dedicated, though, it is always open to the public for a few weeks.) I'd guess the closest LDS temple to you would be the one in Montreal:
If Jordan St. Francis is in St. Catharines, the temple in Brampton would be quite a bit closer than Montreal:

Toronto Ontario Temple Main

(they call it the "Toronto" temple on the web site, but it's really west of Toronto in a suburb)

But from where he is, it'd be a toss-up whether Palmyra, NY would be even closer than Brampton.

My impression is that there would be more for a non-Mormon to do and learn in around Palmyra than at most temples. At a temple, all a non-Mormon would be able to do is stand around outside and take pictures; near Palmyra, there's the Hill Cumorah information centre, which AFAIK is all open to non-Mormons.

BTW - Jordan or others: if you get out to Vancover at all, keep an ear to the ground for when the open house for the Vancover Temple is. It's under construction right now; the date for the open house is currently TBA.

Also, for Jordan: since you said you like photos of cathedrals, have a look at my RF gallery for the few I took of Basilica Notre-Dame in Quebec City: My Photo Gallery - 9-10ths_Penguin Gallery - Powered by PhotoPost

For "the seat of the primate of Canada", it was strangely monkey-free. I was disappointed in that regard, but the church itself looked nice. :)

It's seriously gorgeous. You should have seen it before the 1993 (I believe) renovation. The building had originally been heated by coal and the walls were absolutely covered with soot. The interior was black! What the pictures showed was the original walls after they were cleaned.

You're right about that. Thanks!

Absolutely! If anyone lives near Vancouver, they need to plan on taking a tour of the temple when the open house happens. Nobody is going to try to convert you; you just get to see the inside of a Mormon temple, every bit of it.

I only know about the Brampton temple because I've driven by it occasionally.

I think I'd like to see it. My wife's sister and her husband live out in Vancouver, so we visit occasionally; I'll have to arrange our visit to coincide with the open house.

We'd probably make an odd group there: an atheist, a Catholic and two Buddhists wandering around a Mormon temple.

I think if we were to walk into a bar afterward, there would be a joke in there somewhere. :)
