Cheerleading is a sport!

The common usage of "hobby" is an activity done regularly for pleasure in your leisure time. If snowboarding is an activity that you have done for pleasure in your leisure on any kind of a regular basis then how is it not a hobby? If a person goes running, just because they enjoy it, or they feel good after doing it, on a regular basis, not for competition, then how is it not a hobby? A hobby is simply a pleasurable activity that one does on a regular basis during free time. I hardly see how running or dancing or snowboarding or shooting hoops or archery or any vast amount of physical activities could not be considered hobbies if they are done for personal pleasure rather than competitively. A sport indicates training for a purpose, honing a skill to put into competition against others. If one isn't doing the physical activity with the purpose of training to compete and is simply doing it for fun then, by definition, it would qualify as a hobby.

What do you think of All Star cheerleading? Do you think we are young prostitutes rather than athletes because of our uniforms? I don't care what anybody thinks! I've been doing All Star since I was 6 and I wouldn't trade it for anything!

In an age when Jennie Finch just got named as the first ever manager of a men's baseball team at the professional level, I think cheerleading is a throwback to a time when women were considered inferior to men.

What of male cheerleaders?

And whomever answers this better be damned careful what they say!
When you put it that way, it temps me to be a smart ***, lol!
I know one guy who was in ballet, and if anyone mocks him he'll ask them if they'd rather have a bunch of hot, sweaty guys jumping on them, slapping you on the ***, and showering with them, or would you rather be on stage touching, lifting, and holding women wearing tight clothing.

Ya, and those guys showering with other guys think they're so tough, whereas us who had to handle the girls had it much harder-- no pun intended.

Actually, I think all girl cheerleading squads tend to come up lacking when compared to those with guys in the squads. With the guys, and the strength they can bring to the tricks, you have higher tosses, better catches and a more well balanced performance all around.

Hogwash!
Those who are called to jumping about in fetching skimpy uniforms should feel no inferiority or shame.
(What are ya try'n ta do mon!?)

I think he was just trying to rattle my cage a bit.
Possibly, but still an odd charge about the cheerleading being connected to women's supposed inferiority when there have been men doing cheerleading just as long. What makes cheerleading an inferior thing? Is any female dominated thing inferior merely for being female dominated? Is being a nurse inferior? Is being an admin assistant/secretary inferior? Is being a teacher inferior? It is upsetting that some do think that way. Not sure if Wirey actually thinks that or if just trying to get your goose (though I do lean more towards goose) but there are those who do think like that and it's bull.

So I suppose you'd say this entire squad only exists because none of these guys could make some other team?

Can't watch videos at work, but if cheerleading is a sport, yelling "**** you, ump!" while not spilling your beer is also a sport. Sport involves completion, the ability of another to actively mess with you. Hockey is a sport because I can knock the puck off your stick if you don't try to stop me. Football is a sport because I can make you stop running. Speed reading, not. If I read faster than you and claim it's a sport, it's actually just proof I suck at life. "Gimmee a T" has no sport basis. No one can stop you from yelling it, although they may be legally required to provide the T in some jurisdictions.

If you're talking about the acrobatic crap they do, it requires athleticism, but still, not a sport. Professional wrestling requires athleticism. Cheerleading is a bogus waste of time with no value, other than to give morons something to stare at while the real athletes take a quick break. Said the former athlete who spent 5 hours a day, every day, sweating and working to be the best so after the game he could bang cheerleaders.

I can get all new agey, & say "I compete against myself".

There is competition with today's cheerleaders, and one of my granddaughters and her squad were runner-up in state competition this last spring. Not only is it very athletic, it also involves quite a bit of physical risk. Also, they practice all summer whereas even the football players don't start up until mid-summer.
