Child dies while parents forgo doctor, rely on prayer.

Examples such as these are proof that belief alone will not constitute reality and serves as precedence to answer the questions such as "How can belief and religion do harm?"

I don't know man, maybe the kid dying is apart of the bigger picture. Maybe you posting that link and my response is the bigger picture.

Maybe people should understand that a prayer is a request, not a command given to God so that He'll do what we tell Him to do when we want it.

I have voiced my utter disgust and dismay at ideas and actions like this before. Someone should have taken action for this girl, instead of letting her parents play russian roullette with her life. They deserve the jail-time and a good backhand a few hundred times, if the heartbreak of losing thier daughter hasn't already broken thier blind faith.

I just don't understand it. Why do these people think that God gave us a mind of our own? So that we may be dependant on Him for everything when another has already used thier God-given mind to create MEDICINE!!!

Where did this ridiculous concept of medicine being evil come from anyway??!!

yes, that little girl died because her parents are nut cases!!!
and believed that a fictional being is going to save her, when they should have went and gave the tried, tested and actually works approach a go, SCIENCE!!

I used to think that it was a request until God led me to anew understanding of the Lord's Prayer. The wording is very commanding:

Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done
Give us this day our daily bread
Forgive us our sins
Lead us not into temptation
Deliver us from evil

and not an if you please ever mentioned.

Aside from belief issues, it is always a difficult thing to know when to go to the doctor. I am a hyochondriac so I go at the drop of a hat but my wife would have to be already half dead before she would go. It took my parents a while to figure out I needed a doctor and that my abnormal behavior (sleeping all the time) was due to an illness. I had an extreme case of anemia and the doctor said he didn't understand how I could still be alive.

A lot of tragedies occur because of false beliefs. Just think how tragic it will be for an atheist when He has to face God at the judgement seat.

There is no reason that something like this should happen with the medical knowledge available.....This is ignorance and they should be punished. They are guilty of killing their own child. :sad4:

It does remind me of the joke:

A man is stranded on his roof during a flood. After awhile, a man in a raft comes by, and offers him a ride. The man says no because God is going to save him. A little bit later a boat comes by offering him a ride again. Still convinced that God is going to save him, the man refuses this too. Finally a helicopter flies down, and offers him a ride, as the waters are really getting bad. Again the man refuses on the grounds that God will save him. Eventually the waters rise to the point that the man drowns. He gets to Heaven and asks God why he didn't save him. God replies "I sent you a raft, a boat and a helicopter, what more do you want from me?"

That case is just plain ridiculous. Such extremism is not typical. We pray and go to the doctor. God gave us a mind in order to fend for ourselves. With that mind we created the medicines we need to survive. That's just stupid.

And people say religion doesn't cause any harm.

This wasn't religion that caused this it was ignorance, in the name of religion, they didn't even belong to a legitimate faith.

We have religion then we have nut cases who go around and do stupid things. It is more like a cult type of worship, sort of like happened to the LDS, so we all shouldn't be catagorazied with just calling it religion.

If one atheist, or any other religion did this, should we blame all of that group or should we not call it an isolated incident....

I am not picking at you, I respect you too much, but I just need to make a point like the old saying Let's not let one bad apple spoil the whole barrel.

To say that these parents were "religious nuts" would be putting it mildly.

It's a shame nobody could have taken action against the parents before their daughter died.

this is the reson i always agreed that for every religion we should make a scroll and write something like god wants you to beat yourself to dead with your own arms so the extreemists would just kill themself without harming others

I did like the joke and it really fits with this story......about the little girl.

Her dad was holding prayer service, said it was a test of faith....He was saying God help my daughter and God probably thought, you Idiot I already have, I have sent you doctors for just such a time as this.

I didn't say that religion was bad. I just hate it when people say that religion doesn't cause any harm. It does cause harm. I'm not saying we should abolish it. This is a rare event, and so, of course, doesn't reflect on the entire Christian community.

What does it take for faith to be "legitimate"?
And I disagree.
It was religion that caused this.
For if not for the faith (legitimate or not) of the parents that God was going to heal their daughter, she likely would have gotten medical treatment
