On a deeper level I can see the viewpoint of the 19 year old kid and the importance of the statement. Metaphorically speaking Adam and Eve were evicted from the garden of Edan for induldging in the one thing that was not a part of God in the garden...the forbidden fruit.
Actually, they were expelled from Paradise because they disobeyed what God said, accordingly. The fruit was created by God, so there was nothing un-Godly about it. It was the breaking of that commandment which merited their expulsion. If you believe that story, of course.
Anyway, on to the subject at hand...
Creating music is one of the things that makes us human. Being able to organize certain noises to inspire any array of emotions is one of our God-given gifts. As a musician and a very pious person, I believe this whole-heartedly. Jesus never said we had to donate all of our attention and efforts to God, according to the Gospel. He did command us to love God with all of our mind, body, and soul (the first of the two Great Commandments), but listening to music isn't going to cause us to
not love God, is it? Call it multi-tasking, if you want.
"I'm listening to Paganini and I'm loving God," or, "Hey God, this Metallica solo really kicks ***, huh?"
People are too strict in their interpretations of prophets and of God. In my opinion, anyway.
