Would not using a God given talent fall under that heading as well?
Yes...*but* (there's always a but :D )....it's how the talent is used. For example, if you have a talent to sing and you use that talent to sing songs about killing cops, beating up women, etc. then you are abusing the talent God gave you.

On a deeper level I can see the viewpoint of the 19 year old kid and the importance of the statement. Metaphorically speaking Adam and Eve were evicted from the garden of Edan for induldging in the one thing that was not a part of God in the garden...the forbidden fruit.
Actually, they were expelled from Paradise because they disobeyed what God said, accordingly. The fruit was created by God, so there was nothing un-Godly about it. It was the breaking of that commandment which merited their expulsion. If you believe that story, of course.

Anyway, on to the subject at hand...

Creating music is one of the things that makes us human. Being able to organize certain noises to inspire any array of emotions is one of our God-given gifts. As a musician and a very pious person, I believe this whole-heartedly. Jesus never said we had to donate all of our attention and efforts to God, according to the Gospel. He did command us to love God with all of our mind, body, and soul (the first of the two Great Commandments), but listening to music isn't going to cause us to not love God, is it? Call it multi-tasking, if you want. :D "I'm listening to Paganini and I'm loving God," or, "Hey God, this Metallica solo really kicks ***, huh?"

People are too strict in their interpretations of prophets and of God. In my opinion, anyway.

Wow! Interesting thread! If Quakers, and others I'm sure, choose not to listen to music or include it in worship for whatever reason, I can respect that. It's not for me, and music has always been an important part of my church's ministry. BTW...our minster likes classic rock.:jam:

Funny story, and not too far OT Our minister was driving several of us somewhere on a church outing, and one of the youths put The Steve Miller Band's Greatest HIts. Great CD if you like 70s rock. Anyway, we're all singing along to 'Jet Airliner' when I look at him and mouth 'Is this the original version?'. He looked back for a second, then  and turned the volume down right about Steve sang 'I don't want to get caught up'. :biglaugh: Those who know the next line please fill in the ones who don't. ;)

Exactly, that´s my point. I would put it this way:

...then you are MUSUSING the talent God gave you.;)
