Christians; Are Modern Prophets worth anything?

JacobEzra.

Dr. Greenthumb
You just don't like the idea that Jesus discovered America before Columbus did, but there is nothing about Mormon doctrine that is any more "ridiculous" than mainstream Christian doctrine. It's just a matter of what you believe and what you don't believe.

I couldn't give a **** about Columbus. But anyway, I herd it was Viking brutes who first found America. Israelites though? They didn't have the technology to do something such as cross the Atlantic or Pacific.

lol for such a pure church with pure doctrine, none of it is really that old
It actually dates further back than Catholic doctrine. It's a restoration of the doctrines taught in Christ's time, whereas Catholic doctrine was developed by a series of councils over hundreds of years.

Show me a modern prophet? Only ones I have herd of were either crazies like Koresh, or complete frauds (like the ones who are JW  )
Your mind is closed so tightly that you wouldn't recognize a modern prophet if there was one. You refuse to even acknowledge that it's reasonable for God to communicate to us today the way He always used to, so "showing you a modern prophet" would be absolutely impossible. I can assure you that the LDS prophet today is neither a "crazy" nor a "fraud," regardless of what you might think.

Yeah, Noah didn't have the technology to build an ark either, so I'm guessing you don't believe he did.

That is what every denomination claims. Though your lack of support by church fathers speaks volumes.

LOL Like LDS prophets who said the world would end, and it has yet to!? Suree

I can support almost all of our doctrines through early Church writings (1st through 3rd centuries). And every denomination does not claim to be a restoration of the original Church. Most of them arose through the Protestant Reformation. They tried to reform the Catholic Church, not restore the original church through revelation and direct guidance from Jesus Christ himself.

I think maybe you're getting us mixed up with Jehovah's Witnesses. Our prophets have never prophesied a date when the world was supposed to end.

You know, Jacob, when you first came to RF, I was really happy to see another Catholic poster. You know why? Because Catholics are, as a rule, so much more respectful, open-minded, and tolerant than other Christians. Clearly, there are exceptions to that rule, though. Too bad you have to be one.

Thats a first I herd that protestants don't think they are the like the original  Lets just say we all are the original, because I couldn't care less.

Yes, and your remarks made towards me have been oh so respectful. Im not the first one to disrespect anyone on this thread. But keep acting innocent and like I am the bad guy.

If prophets were worth something anciently, they are indeed worth something today. God communicated to mankind through His chosen prophets throughout the Old Testament, and in Amos we read: "Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." There is nowhere in scripture where we are told that God would suddenly stop communicating with us the way He has since the beginning of time, and instead leave us with just a book to go on.

No one can dispute this clear fact.

I don't take it literal
Oh, I see. Well, you can dismiss a whole lot of stories in the Bible with that stance. I don't take it as literal either, by the way. I don't believe that Noah was able to round up every two of every single kind of animal in the world and herd them onto a boat. I don't believe the flood totally covered the earth either. But I don't simply dismiss the story as being an outright fabrication either. I'm curious as to what you actually do take literally, though. Do you believe that Jesus Christ actually brought Lazarus back to life after he'd been dead three days? If so, why? To me that sounds a whole lot more outlandish than the idea that a couple of dozen Israelites received divine guidance to help them build a ship.

Well, you learn something new every day, don't you. And you can say "we all are the original" if you want, but since we all teach different doctrines, that would be pretty much impossible.

Actually, I've always been respectful towards you. I've never ridiculed your faith once. I've even stuck up for Catholicism on other threads. How quickly you forget.

I don't outright dismiss it. I believe it has different meaning.

He could've, I don't know. I think there is a total lack of proof that Israelites came here. I think its just an Americanized exploitation of the lost tribes.

They say they are the original. Your the one who denies they claim it. You can claim your church is the original, I can claim it, Everyone and their mothers can create a church and claim it. I really don't care. I doubt it is a priority to God and Jesus if anyone is following exactly one way. But to be fair, the gospels for centuries have left out Jesus being in America. But whatever. If you think God really cares about that and about people focusing on that, then thats on you. I am pretty sure God is more worried if we try to live good lives and help each other out, making the world better.

You ridiculed me and my faith in this thread. I don't care so much about the ridicule for the faith, but of me, plus being in a bad mood, yeah I won't take it that nicely

That's funny, since it has nothing to do with the lost tribes. Good try, though.

They claim to have reformed the doctrines that were being taught at the time of the Protestant Reformation so that they would be in line with what is taught in the Bible. That's not the same claim Mormonism is making at all.

You can claim your church is the original, I can claim it, Everyone and their mothers can create a church and claim it. I really don't care. I doubt it is a priority to God and Jesus if anyone is following exactly one way.
Really? You doubt it's a priority to God that we understand the gospel of Jesus Christ correctly? Well, to each his own.

But to be fair, the gospels for centuries have left out Jesus being in America.
There is nothing fair or unfair about the gospels failing to mention a post-ascension visit of Christ to the Western Hemisphere. The people in the Eastern Hemisphere were completely unaware of it, except that He did tell them that other sheep, not of the same fold as they, would also hear His voice. Since He had previously stated that His own personal mission was only to the house of Israel, and since He said that these "other sheep" would hear his "voice" (and not just His message as it would be taught by His Apostles), we believe this is a reference to those of the house of Israel who had left the Holy Land six hundred years earlier.

If you think God really cares about that and about people focusing on that, then thats on you. I am pretty sure God is more worried if we try to live good lives and help each other out, making the world better.
I actually agree with you, which is why I don't label other people's deeply held beliefs as "ludicous" or attach rolling-eyed smilies to my posts. "LOL!" when replying to someone's post isn't exactly respectful.

Which post did I ridicule you in? I re-read everything I posted in this thread and I have no idea which post you're even talking about. Not agreeing with someone is not the same thing as ridiculing that person, Jacob.

Whatever it is, point still stands.
Your point still stands? Come on, Jacob. I just got through telling you that your initial premise is flawed (i.e. your assumption that we believe the people in the Book of Mormon were the lost tribes). So if your initial premise is flawed, how the hell can your point still stand? (You haven't had a lot of experience debating, have you?)
