Christians: Lying on the forums

It never occurred to me to openly lie on the forums about anything.

I wonder if there are Christians who think that it is ok to lie and steal (e.g., plagiarism) on the forums when it's not ok to lie in real life.

I mean - a lie is a lie, right?

I'm just curious if Christian ethics were somehow suspended in the forums.

Amen. and its a shame that your scholarship is wasted on this instead of on constantly upgrading our forum quality as the longstanding members aim for.

:biglaugh:

These are my comic books, man.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
I don't think that lying, plagiarism, etc is right and the idea that because it's "online" rather than "in real life" is a totally alien thought to me.

Why do you ask? Is there some sort of chronic or increasing problem with this on RF?

Well, I think that lying centers on a few things - mainly it's making up stuff about science for creationism, history, and biblical languages.

Plagiarism is chronic as well, mostly on the topics above. But more than half of these folks get banned quickly.

There's not an increase I don't think. I'm just getting sick of it.

Can you expound?

You mention plagiarism and I automatically look at my own posts thinking...what the heck have I done wrong? I can't help it. I'm very cautious on the interwebs...

Can you be more specific? Perhaps people aren't intentionally doing anything on purpose to lie or to represent poorly as Christians.

Well, at the very least you say someone else said X, or include their name.

At best, anything that you don't think up yourself you put it in quotes and give the author / title / www.

I try to consistently give sources when I copy and paste anything, or even when I'm just referring to an article/site/blog in general. If I ever haven't, I can assure you it was an omission of carelessness, not deceit. And rare, at that.

I hope you're not talking about me! I would be mortified!

People should be aware of the importance of giving credit where credit is due...

Plagiarism is unacceptable. After reading your post I thought of something else (intellectual property rights and such) and I feel terribly small. I post pictures from websites all of the time and don't know if I've ever cited sources. I never thought anything of it...and now I feel like a loser. Thanks. :) I know it's not the same as hijacking someone's written work but it makes me feel awful just the same.

I can see myself failing to cite properly out of stupidity. It wouldn't come from a place of deceitfulness because I'm not a dishonest person. It hurts me that you'd view me in such a light, for being dopey, for making a mistake.

I won't be posting on this forum as freely as I have in the past.

For the record...I purchase licenses for my avatars...

What's the staff's responsibility, if any, if someone plagiarizes or intentionally lies?

OK... now I feel like I should change my avatar from Clint Eastwood back to the picture of me.

I just really liked Gran Torino better then I thought I would. The ending was priceless.

Well... just so you all know... I'm not Clint Eastwood.

Now "Get off my lawn!"

I'm not sure what you mean ? . . anyways, Peace K.

He's talking about how some Christians are caught deliberately fabricating falsehoods about whatever they're debating, or how some get caught copying and pasting stuff off of other websites without naming the source or giving credit and then presenting it as if it were their own argument.

It seems to me that those who hide who they are also hide what they are. On the internet, this seems endemic. The virtual world is after all only a mere shadow of reality. All one may do is to be as true as can be to ones core values and ignore the lure and distraction of 'shiny things'.....

I do not speak for the staff as a whole, but when I see long posts or even multiple pages of posts which appear to be generic, I google the topic or key words and usually find the real author quickly.

I believe it is the staffs responsibility to educate the poster of our rule against plagiarism and guide the new member to post responsibly.
