Jose Fly got the facts on Forer effect down pretty well, but there's a few things I wanted to get to.
Evolution is not our religion. For many people who accept evolution their religion is Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, or, in the case of our resident biologist, the Cherokee religion. For us non-theists evolution is simply one scientific theory. We defend it not because we have some fanatical attachment to it, but because science must be defended from religious oppression. Why don't you think Forer effect applies on those who think evolution is their religion
I wish I lived in that society. Unfortunately I live in a society where Christianity has become so powerful that it actually becomes a legislative force. Maybe your society is better at keeping people from forcing their theology on others, but in mine religion keeps gay people from getting married and biology from getting taught to kids.because they lived in a society that abandons religion and think it's a way of going back to the world of darkness and misery?
I don't think you understand the Forer Effect. It only works when a person is attributing high degrees of accuracy to descriptions of themselves that are, in fact, very vague. It applies to you because you are taking vague statments from scripture and taking them to refer to real and specific scientific principles. It can never apply to something that causes someone to change their mind, it can only serve to affirm an existing opinion. Why don't you think Forer effect applies to a person who wants to escape religion and follow his materialistic needs via asserting a theory that lacks any true evidence?
