Evolution is not our religion. For many people who accept evolution their religion is Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, or, in the case of our resident biologist, the Cherokee religion. For us non-theists evolution is simply one scientific theory. We defend it not because we have some fanatical attachment to it, but because science must be defended from religious oppression.

I wish I lived in that society. Unfortunately I live in a society where Christianity has become so powerful that it actually becomes a legislative force. Maybe your society is better at keeping people from forcing their theology on others, but in mine religion keeps gay people from getting married and biology from getting taught to kids.

I don't think you understand the Forer Effect. It only works when a person is attributing high degrees of accuracy to descriptions of themselves that are, in fact, very vague. It applies to you because you are taking vague statments from scripture and taking them to refer to real and specific scientific principles. It can never apply to something that causes someone to change their mind, it can only serve to affirm an existing opinion.

Because most people who agree with evolution are not relying heavily on vague, can mean about anything they want it to mean, texts for their evidence.

i'm not saying what you claim is anywhere truthful, this is another dishonest attempt to push old rhetoric....however, did it ever occur to you that changing ones mind is a sign of strength and not weakness...your ideology, i would assume, is your standard by which reality has to bend backwards in order for it to fit into the world that surrounds you...but for those who choose to live in reality, they bend their ideology in search for the truth...

So what you're saying is we can't use these methods to date biblical text, places, artifacts...etc. So basically your "faith" just might be built on a sham because there's no way to substantiate the claims made by its followers.....is this what you're saying?

You can't have it both ways.....These dating methods work just fine when you're trying to date biblical text and artifacts.....why not for anything else..?.....

Personally I stopped believing in fairy tales, Santa Clause, monsters, devils and other things I was told as a child a long time ago! Being narrow minded, fundamentalist and taking an ancient book written by goat herders 2-3 thousand years ago as literal 100% word for word true and the word of God and discounting modern science because it disagrees with said ancient book is insane!

That said, I do believe in a God! In fact every time I look up at the night sky and see the Milky Way I'm even more convinced! But when someone tells me his/her interpolation/beliefs of his/her book is the only true way, I think how conceded and diluted this person must be! They seem to be saying "Believe as I do or else, mine is the only truth and the only way". I can't imagine an all powerful and caring God would condemn to Hell those that don't believe exactly in one groups way of seeing things!!!

Back in the early 90's I came to real turning point in my life. My wife (now ex) ask the pastor of the Nazarene church we had been attending to our house for dinner one night. He was a man I had a great deal of respect for and also someone I considered pretty knowledgeable. After dinner he and I had a long talk. He listened to my story and uncertainties and suggested we pray together, assuring me God would answer my questions (not the help I was looking for). Needless to say my questions went unanswered. I response to my questions regarding science, age of the Earth, dinosaurs not being mentioned in the Bible etc, his very simple answer was "well son sometimes you just gotta have faith". I've always had faith, what I've never had in my heart is anything that would convince me ANY orginized religion has a monopoly on the right way to believe in God.
