Am I culturally appropriating the USA by
moving here and speaking the language?
Nope.
IMO, appropriation is asserting that you are ethnically and culturally American Indian when you are not (ala Elizabeth Warren.)
She should tell the Mayor to stop wearing western clothing since it’s Cultural Appropriation of European wear. “Get back into you kimono Mr. Mayor!”Kim Kardashian shapewear drama: Kardashian West drops "Kimono" name from underwear line as Japan accuses her of cultural appropriation - CBS News
I know there has been a thread on this topic in the past, since it appears to be an ongoing issue which crops up from time to time. The latest example is Kim Kardashian's new line of underwear which was named "Kimono." However, after a letter from the mayor of Kyoto asking her to reconsider the name, she has decided to change the name.
Although Kardashian agreed to change the name, the Japanese sent an official from their Patent Office to discuss the situation with the US government.
To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what the complaint is here. Was the clothing line itself disrespectful to Japanese culture, or is it just the choice of the name? Are they claiming that the Japanese would lose money or that it might confuse consumers who are looking to buy an authentic Japanese kimono (yet accidentally buying one of Kardashian's kimonos instead)?
Do cultural symbols only belong to the country they come from? As a counter-example, should Japanese baseball teams or rock-and-roll bands now disband, since they embrace elements of another culture which is not their own? How far can one take this notion of "cultural appropriation"?
NOW you've done it. I am reporting you, you blighter.
Right-wingers need to stop being triggered by every damn thing. No one said anything about cultural appropriation until the media got hold of the story. What actually happened is that the mayor made a polite request to not use an important cultural symbol to sell underwear, and Kardashian, upon reviewing the request, vountarily acquiesced to this perfectly reasonable request and changed the name. A civil and transparent exchange in which no one's rights were violated. So calm down and stop frothing at the mouth whenever the powers that be tell you to.
Ah, so you aspire to the same level of political maturity as do radical college students. Is this just a case of political dyslexia?
Goodness gracious, it is the lefties who are making
"appropriation" an issue!
Unless, that is, Reed College is actually
run by Rush?

It was probably Italian-Americans that did that, however. That often happened with traditional foods when the people who made and ate them immigrated to a new place. In Chicago the Thai restaurants had two menus. One for non-Thai patrons, and one for Thai patrons, because the traditional Thai food was too spicy for most non-Thai patrons. The Indian restaurants often did the same.Same thing as pepperoni.
Americans invented an Italian-like salami and called it pepperoni, but it is not Italian. Since peperoni means bell peppers in Italian...
We have our own brands of true Italian salami with protected denomination.
Pepperoni is advertised as Italian product...but it is not.
Yeah, those "lefties" just can't seem to stop caring about how other people feel. What fools they are!How long did you have to think to come up with
something that silly?
Your complaint is that right wingers get "triggered"
by "cultural appropriation".
I merely pointed out that it is an "issue" dear to
the left wing.
Its a non issue to me.

And Chinese restaurants serve crappy rice to the
round eyes, because they dont know any better.
True!
I guess it's a good thing I never eat at Chinese restaurants.
Racist.
You mean, because the Chinese restaurants don't know any better? And Chinese restaurants serve crappy rice to the

I think that’s more like admitting to eating at MacDonald’s rather cooking healthy, wholesome meals than any racial thing.Well, I was reminded of a time when I was talking to a couple of Asian women (one was Japanese, the other Korean), and I mentioned something about making Rice-A-Roni. One of them said that I should never tell Asians that I eat Rice-A-Roni, as if I committed some major faux pas. But the other one admitted to cooking Rice-A-Roni on occasion.
