Deep, Meaningful Three O'Clock in the Morning Question...

(I just remembered you're a philosopher. How COULD YOU ask a question that merits a deep answer in the joke section? I'm just shocked  )

Is being a philosopher an excuse for a lack of humor? I think it could be argued that philosophers, of all people, ought to have a sense of humor. How can you really negotiate these things without one? Khalil Gibran, "Keep me away from...the philosophy which does not laugh...." I know there are some serious philosophers -- like Ayn Rand, if you can call her a philosopher -- who lacked humor, but I have never considered most of them to be among the most profound of our kind. Other than that, I have no opinion in the matter.

If a thread falls in the Jokes section, and people don't notice it's a joke, is it still a joke?

Humor for some heavy souls sits in their stomachs like an undigested meal -- they complain it's the food, that it's of poor quality -- but the truth is humor is not for them. Others get the joke, they don't, and then complain the joke wasn't funny to anyone.

Well, before I get too cocky about not being bothered by the joke, I have to admit I was too lazy to give God an ego to get bruised by the question.

Lazy? If we were being serious, I'd say God cannot possibly have an ego. But maybe that's just me.

:( You didn't get my joke.

(I was implying that when we get bothered about someone else's opinion of our beliefs about God, it's really our own ego that's bothered -- because if God does exist, God does not need one, and would not likely have one. IMO the ego is the result of artificial identities we create for ourselves.)

I grant that I didn't. Should I now get all defensive and say your joke wasn't funny? Or have we had enough of that already?
I clarified with an edit while you were posting this. We should stop now, since I think my explaining my joke might open the door for serious discussion.

I'm sorry if it does.

But, I'm going to one up you, and let you know how offended I am that you might not find my joke funny. So, I win. :p

I'm accustomed to folks not finding my humor humorous. It happens all the time, and it falls within the rights of anyone to say they don't like my jokes. I only object when they try to arrogantly decree that it cannot or should not be humorous to anyone. That crosses a line with me. But then, I don't know what I'm talking about -- as my ex wives will attest to.

I hear you.

In this case the title was so over the top, it seemed obvious it would be in the Jokes section.

For the purposes of this post, I spoke with your wives. (Just to be clear, I didn't actually do it. This is for pretend.)

They have informed me that your post is evidence you really don't know what you're talking about, because they did, in fact, think you knew what you were talking about -- but your saying they thought you didn't know what you were talking about is clear evidence you really don't.

Glad I could clear that up for you.
