Dictating Beliefs

Joe_Stocks

Back from the Dead
Hi Draka,

Yeah, I'm not saying get rid of people with unlikable or odd beliefs (if that were so there would be a few people I can think of that would be gone a long time ago). I'm saying there is no use to attack someone and TELL them what their beliefs are and are not. That is what is unacceptable. If someone were to go into a thread you were discussing your beliefs in and were to blatantly say, over and over in several posts, that you really don't believe what you say you believe and that you are lying and that you are "pretending" or that you don't know anything about your own religion (that they aren't even a member of)...wouldn't that irk you?

I think we are talking about two different things:

1. A person questions whether someone really believes X even after that person said they believe X.

2. A person debates the merits and demerits of proposition X.

I think (1) could be a serious problem while obviously not (2).

It's all great to chat about, but what's the point??... there are only a few people on this forum whose opinions matter.... you can chat all day long about what should happen...

And that makes for a conversation...like anything else.

Why discuss anything then? It's not like we are actively changing the world with every thread or discussion we have on this forum. Why not have this conversation? It's just as valid a conversation topic as any other.

Heh, consider it a discussion of ethics. We have plenty of those here... discussions of how people SHOULD behave when interacting with one another. Nobody assumes or expects that their opinions on the subject are going to change in any way how people actually DO behave... they're just offering their opinions. And it seems to me that ethics, to a limited degree, apply to internet usage as well as other human activities. So why not discuss the ethics of forum discussions?

this is sounding like a conspiracy, this forum manages well enough weeding out trolls etc and when someone steps over the line, most of us do it at some time, (except me)so i don't see the problem and should i be whispering

I strongly disagree!

Everyone's opinion matters, regardless of what the opinion might be
