Diversity the Prisons, Make Them Look More Like the U.S.!

The prison population, demographically, ethnically and culturally, does not reflect what America looks like. We as a country strive to make prestigious schools and employment look "more like America." Isn't it time that penal institutions do likewise?

The equality we seek should be equal justice. Not equal injustice.

Crime is most often due to inadequate education and poverty. Tell us, @jbg, how the penal system is responsible for fixing those issues?

I didn't say that. We just need more "diversity."

They already are representative of the country. The poor go to prison while the rich do as they please. That's the country we live in. Ethnicity is just a tangential factor.

The numbers accurately reflect who it is within our population who are refusing to obey our laws.

They accurately reflect who is being sentenced to prison. Which is completely not the same thing.

No, it is proving how ridiculous your logic is.

Half of all Americans are women… yet only 7% of inmates are women. Do you feel women are “under-represented” in prison? Is systemic-sexism responsible for the “over-representation” of men in prison?

Well, actually, yes. Studies show that when convicted for similar crimes, men tend to be more likely to be found guilty and more likely to be given harsher sentences.

But in any case, no. This is not proving anything about anyone's logic. Believing that prisons, ideally, would be more representative of demographics does not mean you want MORE of a particular group in prison. That logic does not follow.
