Oh, we're listening (or rather, reading), & believe that this distinction does not exculpate.
Many faiths have prescriptions relating to gender, conversion & marriage which we secular types
find less than tolerant, eg, punishment of apostates, refusing gay marriage, no female clergy.
These will seem valid & fair to fervent believers who are immersed in a like minded environment,
but we outsiders are going to disagree. Note also that many Jews will have similar disapproval
for others' faith based practices they dislike.
I don't say that Jews & Israel must change this. I'm just disapproving. And thus, my opinion
shouldn't cause any consternation.
