You find it plausible that not only people's souls survive their deaths, but the souls of their clothes, too?

Sure, let's go with that.

I recognize that I can be fooled. Why should I assume that what you saw exists outside your head?

If I were in your position I'd assume it was entirely in my head... Or that I'm lying.

It seems to me that the main difference between what you saw and what I saw was that I was able to come back later and try to confirm what I saw.

I have what I need to form my own opinions. I trust you have what you need.

By the way, my understanding is non-physical entities can control their appearance through thought. So they appear in whatever 'clothes' they want. Dense physical matter is nearly impossible to control with thought so we tend to think inside that box for non-physical planes too.

So you think that this ghost chose to be grey and have "gaping pits for eyes", then?

Who knows what that entity was or was not. There are untold things on the super-physical planes beyond deceased humans. One possibility is a malevolent entity that wants to horrify humans.

And the old-timey clothes help with the horror?

Another possibility is that an apparition whose description sounds suspiciously like the ghost librarian at the beginning of Ghostbusters might not actually be real. No offense to Shyanekh, but he wouldn't be the first person to feel very sure of something that wasn't rooted in anything external.

Who knows? Stuck in a time-period??

Not knowing our friend Shyanek, that is a possiblity too.

To be fair to you, that scene did scare the hell out of me as a kid ;) This was most certainly male though, the Ghostbuster's librarian was female wasn't it?

Ultimately I don't know precisely what I saw*. I do know that a couple of people have described the same thing as me though. My uncle for example, he moved to Australia before I was born and as a child he lived in the house that I saw my ghost in. Years down the line he described the same thing as me.
I've honestly gone through this in my head for a long time and I'm fully aware of the potential for trickery our minds have. I've decided that I'm as certain about what I saw as I possibly can be. As such, I believe in ghosts but I don't expect my own story to convince anybody else.
I know that my word isn't worth a great deal over the internet, but I promise you this isn't a case of me going for the first thing that roughly makes sense. What I experienced impacted me deeply and has always been a factor in me questioning my beliefs and the beliefs of the general public.

*By this I mean I don't know if it was a person's soul, an afterimage or whatever. I only know that I saw something that could be thought of as a ghost.

Also the possibility that ghosts and spirits are real....

Does the fact that people from the bronze age were unable to scientifically explain the phenomenon of thunder and lightening mean that storms never occurred during the bronze age?

Does the fact that ancient Greeks took the Delphi oracles' prophecies seriously mean we should assume they were seeing real visions and just ignore the strong possibility of hallucination-inducing ethene gas being emitted from the fissure under the temple's altar?

It is a phenomenon that I am interested in. What exactly "ghosts" are though, is a whole different kettle of fish. Me personally, I don't think there's enough proof that they are disembodied spirits or constructs of the mind one way or another. Like many other aspects in life, I lie somewhere in the middle.

I have seen things. I know I saw some things. But what did I see? Maybe I saw ghosts in the more common sense of the word? Maybe I saw lingering energy in a more metaphysical way? Maybe my brain had some misfires?
