Huh?
I tend to avoid using big words in general life because people either don't understand what they mean or feel threatened by a person which a broader vocab than them. Sometimes it means an explanation takes longer than neccessary but this is preferable to having someone with a limited vocab become aggressively defensive.
I don't think a broad vocab neccessarily denotes intellegence but often it's the product of those activities which the more intellectually/academically inclinded choose to partake in.
Personally I've always disliked the stigma which is associated with having a broad vocab. Its reminicent of school where bright children had to keep their heads down because the less bright, or the particually stupid, kids would bully them.
Intellect isn't particually prized by the general populace. In my experience intellegent people are usually acused of lacking in common sense and this claim is justified by fair bit of cultural stereotyping and confirmation bias.
