does owning a pet seem sinful?

Let me tell you about my Tom Cat. He just showed up at my house as a Kitten. I did not pick him to be my cat, he picked me.
that's not really fair for tom. he was placed in a system like his parents before him, and before that with his other relatives.
for a more extreme example. if you're parents were kidnapped and lets say forced to live in a new strange place they knew nothing about from strangers, or did not know how to escape, or that there was an escape. then you came into the picture after your parents owners took you from them and threw you into the streets, most likely you'll do what tom did as a young one. what else can you do?

Shall we draw the line?
who's gonna go by that line?

The words are right there....
Heaven and hell...the line drawn.

If you go to heaven you are free.
Go to hell...you are someone's pet.

Is it sinful?

I may be reading this wrong. but it sounds like what you are saying is that we kind of have the same power over pets, that god has over us, so that justifies pet ownership with humans.
if that's the case, then I do not agree with that theory.
but thanks for your reply. :beach:

Back up to post#68.

There's nothing wrong with that logic.

And God seems to have done so unto us?.....let's shift perspective....

The Old Book claims God made Man a little less than the angels.(written)
and then to the angels He said....
Man is less than you so seek after him a make certain he would not dash his toe or his head.(not written)

One third of the angelic said ..'nay..
Man is less than we are and therefore should be made to serve us.'

There's nothing wrong with that logic.
We humans do so unto everything less than we are.
We saddle horses and break their spirit.
We force the animal to take us wherever we care to go.

It is the nature of the dog to roam in packs and hunt at will.
We humans chain the animal, and forbid that it might bite the hand that feeds it.
We then expect it's affection and loyalty.

We cage little birds for their love songs.
But the creature will never find the mate he sings for.
No nest, no offspring and he will die in solitude.

We kill insects on sight.

We do unto lesser life as we see fit.
Even unto each other.

To whom do we bear resemblance?

The story I got.....a fight broke out.
Brother angel against brother angel.
One third of heaven fell.
They lost their position over an argument about something that looks like us.
They want us dead.
Two thirds of heaven lost their brothers over an argument...about us.
They might not care.

To whom do we bear resemblance?

btw....we have a dog...and enough ground to chase Frisbee.
Never have seen a happier puppy.

The only pet I see as being 'sinful' in owning, is a bird or any other animal kept exclusively in a cage and denied its freedom.

I feel a certain pity for caged birds, as they remind me of humans as a species. We have the wings to fly to the sun, but we are trapped within the confines of our own ignorance.

Like those elephants that have been tethered in chains for so long, that now, a piece of cotton, so easily broken can bind them fast.

Yeah...learned helplessness.

...but pets like dogs and cats seem to enjoy our company if/not more than we enjoy theirs. They don't seem to suffer the 'indignity' of being our companions, nor are they disadvantaged in any way. We are their 'meal ticket' and all they have to do is look cute, suffer the occasional annoying rub on the head/belly and pretend to enjoy it by a bit of tail wagging...although, in a cat, that is generally not a good sign...

Still, it's perfectly okay to own pets...and fish don't know any better, so I didn't include them.

So as long as the 'pet' knows not it's captivity....that's ok?

Maybe sin is held to the captor?
Excused from sin because the 'pet' doesn't know?

I honestly don't know, but all I know is that if I had wings, I'd want to stretch them...so maybe I am putting 'me' onto 'bird'...but I still don't think it's fair that a free spirit gets caged up like that.

Once, as a kid at the zoo, I saw a very proud and mighty tiger in a cage just pacing back and forth from boredom....wishing his cage had more 'savannah inclusions'...I saw him cry...well, his eyes could have just been watering...

Do you think a bird actually 'feels' anything when it is freed from the confines of a cage? That is the question.

Oh yes...I was just reminded about the one other time when I actually 'connected' with an animal.

I forget how old I was, but it was somewhere between 10-12.

My whole family went for a day out at a country fair and I was bugging them all morning for a pony ride...of course, as a young girl, I went through a 'horse phase' (I often wonder what the attraction between adolescent girls and horses is - without stating the obvious, but I also liked the fillies, which rendered that point all rather moot).

Anyway, I wanted this pony ride and wouldn't let up until my olds said 'whatever...let's give this girl a darn pony ride so we can enjoy our day out'.

When we got there, the line was huge...about 50 people lining up for 6-7 ponies.

It took about an hour and a bit, but I eventually got to the top of the line and was allotted my pony...an old, sad, scruffy looking thing just looking at me...gazing into my eyes, when I 'heard' it, as plain as day 'do we really have to do this again? I'm exhausted and need a break...seriously'.

I just couldn't do it. I couldn't get on that pony, no way.

I apologised to the owner of that ride and asked him to please give my pony a break for a while if he could...it just didn't 'feel right'.

He understood and said he had a few ponies out back he 'rotated out' and my pony was due for a break in half an hour anyway, but he'd use my ride-time to cut into it - I didn't accept the refund (it was offered, but the fault was my own).

*The most difficult part of it all was, trying to explain it to my parents.

Yeah, that memory just came back.

So you do understand ...the sin.

Its domesticating an animal that was sinful in the first place. It took away the freewill. Now chicken dont fly...and dogs cant live without us feeding them, or at least providing shelter. So the question is what now???
