Drugs and God!

Why did God put marijuana, magic mushrooms and poppy plants on the planet if they were not to be used?

It is my belief that some of these drugs - especially the first two, were intended for us to communicate with God - the Holy Power of Nature.

perhaps, but does it get you high?

anyway, being in the transcendent state is one of Nature's tools of communication with the other realms.

1. to test us?
2. because he wanted to?
3. why not?
4. because he knew you would make a thread on RF to ask why?
5. for fun?
6. to cure some decease or snake bites?
7. because its food for some animals?
8. to teach people that not everything is healthy?
9. to trick atheist to eat it?
10. to make atheist not belief in him?

there are probably more points that can be played with but you get the point.

why else could we pick mushrooms from the early morning field and then walk around the forest communing with the Holy One?

We take Nature's products to bond with the joy.

If there is a higher power then I 100% agree with your line of thinking!

what would the biological purpose of magic mushrooms be?

cows eat them perhaps, maybe to commune with the Animal God.

marijuana - why does it get you high - what is the purpose?

I would say that God put these things on Earth as a conduit to his special Force.

The biological purpose of magic mushrooms is to reproduce, like any living organism. That they hydroxylate tryptamines to form psilocybin and psilocin is probably just a fortunate accident.

I'm not sure if cows get high, or if reindeer think they are flying when they eat amanita muscaria mushrooms, but I do know that people once followed deer which had eaten the amanitas so they could collect the deer's urine, which contains a non-toxic version of the psychedelic found in the mushroom. Actually, according to the Dead Sea Scrolls, translated by John Allegro, the Essenes used amanita muscaria as a sacrament, and it is the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil referred to in the Bible. The Vatican heavies were not amused.

As to the purpose of marijuana, the more pertinent question would be - what is the purpose of the receptor sites in your brain which are modulated by cannabinoids in marijuana ? Or mescaline ? Or LSD ?

Clearly, there are evolved brain functions which are 'psychedelic'. Marijuana, LSD and Peyote etc trigger existing brain structures. Marijuana and magic mushrooms only do what they do because there are natural neurophysiological behaviours which they, as analogs of natural human neurotransmitters, trigger into action.

Which means, the authentic experience of the prophets and sages is ...

that seems to make a strong case for the real purpose of these naturally occurring products - put on the Earth to allow us to communicate with God - this is real Earth Magic at work here!

No doubt the Vatican heavies were not amused as it would not have fitted in with their BS ideology.

Magic is there to communicate with God and the fact that it exists in plant form is surely proof of an Earth based God, one which was around a long time before the bastardized version we now have.

If it's in the Dead Sea Scrolls, Gnostic Bible and all sorts of other religious texts then it is likely to be true.

God made cyanide so we could ingest it's Holy Power of Nature.

The plants that have a positive affect on us were intended by God to be used, otherwise why would they be there?

Cyanide would not do this so obviously should not be consumed.

Why assume that God tampered with plants to make them produce such chemicals?
You know we'll have an evolutionary explanation eventually. Just wait.

Still, drugs can be used as a spiritual aid.
Just take it easy.

I can see that before science had discovered as to what drugs actually do. IMO, in modern days now it's just an excuse to get high in light of the science involved in the study of drugs and it's effects. In other cases in religious settings it could be for traditional use like the use of Peyote by Native Americans.

My main problem with this line of thinking: it seems to presuppose that everything is designed to serve humans. Sorry, but that kind of anthropocentric thinking nauseates me. I don't disagree with the spirit of nnmartin's attitude on drug use, but I don't agree with how he got there. Another good example of why I care less about what people believe than the end results of that belief... two different beliefs can have the same practical outcome.

For the same reason there are poisonous mushrooms and poisonous frogs. Has god intended that we lick poisonous toads? Are shamens correct in using peyote? I think different substances just have different interactions with us and some are bound to be adverse so one would wonder why god didn't just make everything consumable.

Those plants could have a different use other than getting high. Marijuana is used medicinally at times. Morphine and cocaine have been used medicinally, as well- but you wouldn't want to abuse them. Cocaine can damage your heart and other opium products, like heroin can kill people and cause them to be "slaves" of the drugs. Cocaine can be further processed to make crack and other things, and I see crack addicts all the time- it's not pretty. Amphetamines have their uses- but meth amphetamines are worse than crack. People become very addicted to those items and will do anything to get a "hit".
Marijuana can seem harmless- some members of my family smoked it when I was a child- but it was an expensive habit and it caused them to want to eat almost constantly not to mention what it did to their memory.
And although I am undecided about legalizing pot, I am against legalizing other drugs- including the ones mentioned above (outside of medicine, that is).
