I have to argue this one as well. Despite what some people here may believe, many people do actually hold very firm believes in God and see him as a very real being. And consequently they live their lives modeled around the laws and practices of the religion that is tied to their deity.

IF you want to nit-pick and split hairs. But I would say a religious person could hardly fit the atheist label, especially if they are going to church, partake in religious practices and rituals, adhere to religious rules, and so on. Atheist implies a lack in believe in God, and to say someone is an atheist for believing in Jesus but not Krishna is really a very weak point at best.

It is not if the intent is to emphasize how disbelief is a legitimate choice.
But, you have to admit, that even if you only believe in one all powerful being that cares about how you live your life, that's going to have more impact on your actions that if you believed that there was simply "one less" all powerful being that cared about your life.
