Nor do they hold any political or social significance because I'd never be influencing or voting for either.

During the time it took you to post this 17 legal Hispanic Catholics registered to vote.
So you go ahead and vote for your libertarian and see who influences US policies the most.

I don't deny that they have influence, but....
- Their beliefs don't affect mine....I don't go to Santorum for science info.
- I can't change their vote.
Thus, I don't seem much relevance to me in Santorum or Popey.

If 20,000,000 Catholics decided to vote "green" you don't think that would be relevant to you?
How fast do you think the RNC would adapt to finding out that the Catholic vote is now driven by wealth disparity and climate change, and not sex and abortion?
Maybe a month?

Would I agree with them? No.
Could I influence them? No....my influence wouldn't have prevented your scenario.
I do what I do, & I vote how I vote entirely independent of them.
This is what I mean by "irrelevant".

Yes, our upbeat, ever-smiling Pope Francis. As a former boxer, he loves a good match. And he’s going to get one. He is encouraging rebellion against super-rich capitalists, against fossil-fuel power-players, conservative politicians and the 67 billionaires who already own more than half the assets of the planet.

Yeah, right...

If he really wanted to do something useful he'd quit acting so Holier Than Thou and clean up his own backyard.
The biospere is everyone's yard.
Even the people who don't want to inconvenience themselves by caring for it.

Luckily for me I'm a gay male nonparent. Y'all find out the hard way that science doesn't become wrong when inconvenient.

If you really believe the "biosphere is everyone's yard" you wouldn't be trying to impose your misguided agenda on those who question your non-existent facts.

Gee, should I lean more in the direction of the Pope who at least has a science degree, or should I lean more in the direction of the right-wing politicians and Fox "news" for scientific information? Tough choice.

He doesn't actually have a science degree:

Does Pope Francis have a master's degree in chemistry? | National Catholic Reporter

As for the Pope's encyclical, I think I'm going to wait until it's out before I form opinions about what it says.
I agree. People should realize by now that with this Pope there is always a catch of some kind. Perhaps it is wiser to refrain from popping champagne corks until his dissertation goes live. Who knows, maybe he will use the obscene wealth of the Church to put a Tesla at the disposal of every diocese. My prediction is that this speech will land with a dull thud.

I agree with both you & Penguin on this. As far as this pope's dealing with the issue of wealth, I have feeling many in the Curia are pooping bricks, worried that he may sell the "ship".

My prediction on the speech is that it will really **** off the right-wing elements both in the church but also here in the States and elsewhere. Hey, we may even see the likes of O'Reilly and Hannity turn in their official "Catholic" card-- oh, what a tragic loss that would be for the church. .

If the church were not so Machiavellian, I might actually think that this Pope could make a difference. He can't and he won't. Not to say that politician's, around the world, will not milk this for all that it is worth - whatever camp they are sitting in.

I think he has already made a difference, and the fact there there's so many on the right that are so angry is evidence of that. However, I do agree that it's very difficult to change the course of the entire ship, but he's trying, and that I give him credit for.
