Fear of Guns

How reasonable do you think is is to fear death by gun violence?

You are more likely to die from covid.
You are more likely to die in an unintended accident.
You are more likely to commit suicide.

Than be a victim of gun violence.

Does that make you feel better?

Well, I don't care about dying myself as such. I am that old now and in beginning of bad health. I care about the members of society and giving the children a fighting chance. So a world with not that many guns would give them all more of a fighting chance of a good life. That would make me feel better.

You are many times more likely to die from a child "borrowing" his dads gun to play with than you are from a terror attack

I lost my fear of dying too a while back. So I personally don't fear death by gun violence. Wondered if my lack of fear was unreasonable. Children face the same odds. So many ways any of us might die.

I choose not to live in fear.
Still, I'm really, really glad about the security measures put in place at the school my grandchildren go to. I wish other schools would follow suit.

Hope they work, but don't hope they will be needed.

This is literally a reductive argument.

If you're more likely to die from heart disease than any of the above, doesn't mean the above aren't worthy of concern or attention and prevention.

The question is whether they are worthy of fear, not attention.

Yes, why I wouldn't have any guns in my house.
But this is more about personal fear.

There are or were while deash and al qaeda were still active, people who were far more afraid of terrorism than a child with a gun.

Personally death means nothing to me other than hoping am still around to see my children fledge the nest.
On the other hand drying, or more precisely a painful dying i can do without

Impossible.

Meh....

Your theme reminds me that cops are so frightened
of civilians that they shoot to kill with little reason.
Yet their leading cause of death is Covid 19, & many
of them refuse vaccination & masks.
What's it mean?
They're dumb &/or thugs.

I'm also wondering if it is reasonable to feel safer if we ban guns, or feel safer if we arm teachers.

Hard to make rational choices in the face of fear.
However, if it makes us feel better.

My thought exactly. If the same money and measures went into preventing mass shootings as went into anti terror measures, there would be much less mass shootings and probably none if the measures were proportional to the threat.
What is strange is that terror attacks lead to terror and actions culminating in two wars. Mass shootings (which should be classified as terror attacks) lead to "thoughts and prayers".

I'm not a fan of letting feelings dictate public policy.
But practical solutions (even imperfect ones) rule.
