Not everyone is so lucky. In a democracy any and all laws can change over night. Pretty scary thought.

Well no, not overnight. All democracies have checks and balances, some more than others. In the US you have a written constitution to protect your rights, they can’t just be taken away from you; your life can, though, or the life of a loved one, in the blink of an eye, by anyone with a gun.

Laws can change in any country. Even your country, which aside from being a republic is also a liberal democracy. Did you not realise that?

I hear your constitution can even be amended? Or is it set in stone for all eternity, even if circumstances have significantly changed since its composition?

Yes and the bad guys don't care what the laws are. They do tend to shy away from people who can protect themselves.

Things can be changed, however it is a sizable process far more than a regular law.
