Fear of Guns

Most of the anti gun arguments are based on emotion not fact. The “you don’t need that” line is all about personal fear and control issues not a safe society.

I run into emotional arguments on both sides.
Tis a hard issue to discuss dispassionately.

How reasonable do you think is is to fear death by gun violence?

You are more likely to die from covid.
You are more likely to die in an unintended accident.
You are more likely to commit suicide.

Than be a victim of gun violence.

Does that make you feel better?

I've always wondered that if someone would win the lottery, would it make them more fearful of say, getting struck by lightning?

Fortunately, napalm doesn't appear
to be the weapon of choice.
That exactly is the reason to call for the ban of certain weapons and accessories. It's not that they are more deadly, it is just by popularity. In Germany Balisong are banned. They are among the least useful knifes in a fight - but they are cool. I guess the AR 15 is among the most popular for mass shooters. Ban it or restrict it's use to people who really need it.

I tend to use the "You don't need that" line and I can't say I'm particularly afraid of guns. I live in the UK though, so I'm coming at this from a different cultural mindset.

I honestly just don't get why so many people in the USA feel the need to have guns. I understand it if you're a hunter or a farmer* since guns have a functional role there. For most people though, it just seems pointless to own one.

*Just a quick note here that you can legally own guns in the UK if you're a hunter or farmer.

My professional life is focused on eliminating deaths in motor vehicle crashes.

In the US, guns kill more people than motor vehicle crashes do.

You tell me.

You may as well call for a ban on gasoline and styrofoam because anyone can easily make their own Molotov cocktails.
They can but they don't, generally. Why do you think that is? Why is it that people use guns in attacks much more often than they use Molotov covktails?

Also, it's not as if someone walking down the street with an unlit Molotov cocktail wouldn't be stopped by the cops.

Law of unintended consequences wont stop
someone out to kill everyone in sight.

Firearms is the leading cause of death and injury to minors in USA, above all causes.
How does that make you feel?

I'm not getting your point here? How does that relate to what I wrote?

I also don't live in London and haven't seen any signs like that in any of the places I have lived. Do you have a link so that I can get a better idea of what you're referring to?
