I don't see how genetics makes us the same as gorillas and chimpanzees. DNA functions of eyes that are the same between birds and apes don't make them equal
There are many ways to categorize & organize lifeforms.
Once, it was just based upon physical traits we could observe.
Now we have genetics to see new organization.
The latter has led to changes in how we see things.
We aren't identical to chimps.
But our genetic similarity is greater than our physical similarity.

I think my point was that. Genetics affect our physical looks and functions. We do tend to try to group things together for study sake.

At one point, a bat was a bird because it flew in the air. (one way of grouping - not wrong, just different). Later we decided that other factors were important and we regrouped it (not wrong, just different). Like the platypus, we make a decision for study sake.

My position is simply that ultimately we are quite different than the rest of the animal kingdom. That difference puts us in a different category even though genetics says we all have similarities in the functions of eyes, nose, ears, extremities et al.

Try replacing an ape eye with s bird eye.

Degrow!
I know that man has determined what a human kind is.

For an example... man has determined that a platypus is a mammal yet has so many features that are not. So man said, "We have decided it is a mammal for the following reasons..." and then patted themselves on the back saying to each other "Your are right!".

I see mankind as a category all of its own.
Good job you're not a science teacher then.

It appears lately that seeing our similarity is
more useful than putting ourselves on a pedestal.

Mammals are uniquely mammals.
Reptiles are uniquely reptiles
Birds are uniquely birds
Humans are uniquely humans

You're mixing up basic biology. Remember the mnemonic: Keep poor cows on fattening green stuff = kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species.

When classifying creatures like this one ought not conflate kingdom comparisons with more specialized classifications like family or species ;)

Oh my, did I say that!
