Found a puppy...

Druidus

Keeper of the Grove
I found a puppy, barely old enough to walk (still wobbles a bit). She's pretty hungry, as she's been eating my dog's food for the last five-ten minutes. My dog attacked her a little bit, but I saved her. She's now wandering around my house, in search of more food.

I'm going to try to convince my parents to let me keep her, though I don't think that'll go well...

Does she still have blue eyes? You probably should be feeding her milk instead of dog food, it will give her digestion problems and may make her sick. Don't let her eat a huge amount at first, because there's no telling how long since she ate, and if she hasn't eaten and stuffs her self it could be bad...

Did you find the puppy or did the puppy find you? Please give us more details so we can get a visual. We love puppies!!!!! Or at least, some of us do

1. Look for the mother dog. If the puppy can barely walk, it may have been dumped, and you should look to see if there are other puppies, also. It may have gotten away from another family, also.
2. If the puppy can barely walk, it needs to have milk. I just read about weaning - it should happen at four weeks appx. Try soaking some dog food in milk to get a good mix. Soft meat is also ok, as are a few soft treats.
3. Keep the puppy very warm, around 70 degrees. Cold temperatures and especially cold ground can be fatal to young puppies.
4. Check its legs. If it is eating your dog food, it may be older than it looks, and may be able to not walk because of a leg problem or exhaustion.

Thanks for the replies. I'm guessing he's husky, though her paws and snout indicate a small amount of wolf (that's how the vet determined Shadow was part wolf). No idea what to name him, but, like Darwin the parrot, I'm thinking an ancient philosopher or scientist. Maybe an explorer, because he won't stop doing that now. He breaks down every barrier I make (I'm trying to keep him in the living room with me).

He's got black and grey fur, with brown and white tufts and the face, and a white tuft on the end of the tail. At first, I thought someone had removed part of his tail, but I don't think so anymore. As I write this, he's mercilessly attacking the couch cushion blocking him from the kitchen.

I'm going to put up signs to see if someone owns him, but he is extremely hungry, and I doubt anyone does. Probably a stray.

The puppy found me at my house, and Shadow attacked him, so I had to save him. That's when I noticed the ribs where very visible, and he was dirty with some matted blood in places.

How about Vasco? I think that's a cool name :D

Make sure to clean his injuries with warm water. A normal antibiotic can be used. :)

Ooh I'm so excited for you. Can I come visit? :D

My sister said that she saw him across the street earlier today, but there are no other dogs over there.

I'll try when he wakes up (he fell asleep against the couch cushion. :p ).

I did think something was wrong with his legs when I first saw him. Maybe it was from exhaustion, having wandered for days, probably. People are very cruel to dogs here (throwing rocks at them, kicking them, etc.), so maybe he was harmed that way. Though I hope not.

Checking out the links now.

I want it I want it I want it!!!!!:D

I adore the young of most every animal - including the human animal. I find it such a terrible shame that I can no longer 'coo' at babies in public; I cant blame the mums for being supicious of strange men (and there's none stranger than I) - so I can no longer pull silly faces at babies, as I would have been able to do some twenty years ago.

Druidus, haven't you got something 'on' your parents that you can blackmail them with ?
ie "I'll tell the whole town about.... if you don't let me keep the puppy" ?

I hope you can keep her - oh, and post a picture of her and post it!:)

I was excited too, until I realized how much of a struggle it will be to convince my parents to let me keep him. It's perfect timing though! I have no school, or any real reason to leave the house, for four weeks! :jiggy:

I'm wondering if this is a message or lesson from Dannu or Cernunnos, though it's probably coincidence.

Vasco? Who was that?

Pooh. No such thing as coincidences when He's involved. Though I would probably view it as a gift first and a lesson second :D

Admittedly not the nicest guy, but how cool is the name Vasco?!

I think I might name the puppy after Cormac, or Tigranes. Both famous warriors, generals and explorers, and this puppy is a warrior. He's going to be huge! I wish I had the digital camera now (my mom has it), you wouldn't believe how cute he is with his little miniature teeth! I'm going to look for a site that can help me determine age from tooth size.

You have had some excellent advice so I am not going to add to it.

Just give you a big wag and losts of licks on behalf of all Dogs.

Aw, my dog is named Shadow, too. I'd check online to make sure dogs can digest cow's milk. I know it can make cats sick because they can't digest it properly. Poor little thing. I hope you get to keep him =)

Well, it isn't going well. My father said to get the dog out now. I told that I can't just put a seven week old dog (book at the library had info on estimating a dogs age) outside and go one about my business. He said that if we keep this one, what's to stop us from keeping the next? I told that was very poor logic. I ended up telling him that if the dog has to stay out of the house, we'll both live outside (it seems childish, I know, but I can't just leave a puppy that young outside alone). Currently, I'm residing in my car, with the dog.

I can't leave him outside. It's still below zero, and they need at least 21 degrees Celsious to survive at six weeks.

That stinks Druidus:( I hope you find a way to keep the dog.
I've found that guilt works quite well in trying to persuade parents though;)

Guilt seems to be working on me now. My mom is crying that I have no respect for the family, amongst other things. :(

God, this really doesn't help my depression. I told my dad that I'd bring the dog to the pound tomorrow.

This really doesn't make sense. I told them that I'd be willing to get a job again to pay for the dog. It seems they are only withholding the dog for the sake of withholding the dog.
