France Rates Fifty Shades of Grey Suitable for Teens

Why? People in France go to school.
Maybe you misunderstood my post? That, and considering I don't live in France. I was talking about my own experiences, what I have heard from others who are talking about this movie, and it seems that despite the "sexual revolution" we are still pretty much a large group of prudes.
But, then again, where I live it would not at all be unusual for a new neighbor to ask what church/denomination you go to.

Opinions?

The only meaningful reason why censorship and age classification ratings should exist is because certain works could end up troubling people (particularly children) overmuch.

That is at least conceivably not at all a problem in a society that is sufficiently supportive, resolved and frank about the troubling issues.

Between the perceived willingness to discuss sex as an actual reality of everyday life to some extent even with chlidren (not a particularly unwise decision at that, mnd you) and the hints that the movie is more "dangerous" for its subject matter than for what it shows, the decision seems logical and reasonable enough.

Quite frankly, I am far more troubled by the frankly self-contradictory stance of American fiction regarding drugs and war. Rating "Ted" an R instead of an NC-17 is just wrong, for instance.

The sex is the minor issue with this movie and story in general.
Okay, so you're worried about the relationship? Well then my comment still stands. As long as parents are open and frank then kids won't be getting wrong ideas.

Just asking, why would the movie Ted warrant an NC-17 rating? It was barely an M15 where I live and New Zealand even dropped it down to R13 (PG 13 equivalent I guess.)

It is IMO irresponsible to banalize drug use.

Ahh I see. Shows you how short my memory is. I must have seen Ted at least 5 times with friends for various reasons. (Not at the cinemas. Them ******** are hella expensive these days.) Don't remember overt drug use or drug use in the movie. But then we were mostly drunk every time so perhaps that's why :p

From what I've heard, there is really nothing unusual about their relationship, but rather is a fairly common "alternative" form of sexuality. It shocks people because they think sex and love must be gentle and a certain way. This is neither gentle or that certain way, but those relationships are no less loving or caring.

Tried to. Anna sounded like she was like a really really sheltered 14 year old and Christian was a creepy mother****er. The prose is akin to The Hunger Games. Easy and somewhat fast, but I also found it often clumsy and the vernacular did not match the setting. Though at least HG was aimed at a younger audience, frankly I expect a little more from an adult book, but ehhh whatever. Oh and the constant lip biting/inner Goddess talks frustrated me to no end. I read a few of the sex scenes and they were quite bland. I side with the French on this aspect, it's safe, ultimately fluffy and I don't see how any adult can call it "exciting." Though I guess the French actually knows how to do erotica like this. So.....

But whatever, it has fans, so more power to them.

As for kids gleaning some 'bad" things from it......Eh, I don't think are that stupid, honestly. By the time you're what 10 you're able to distinguish fantasy from real life. Considering how young the kids are getting into relationships these days, I think many teens will be savvy enough to know the difference between pining over a fictional Christian and actually meeting the prick in real life. But again, if adults are so concerned, they should actively engage the teen in a frank dialogue about relationships, what is acceptable and unacceptable, how one ought to treat one's boyfriend or girlfriend and talk about aspects of a consensual sexual experimentation.

I view any parent who blames an author (no matter who they're writing for) as "badly influencing" their kids as lazy. An author is not a babysitter, teacher or spiritual adviser when they write a book. They're a storyteller. That's it. (Save for people writing text books and other academia pieces of course.)

I suggest you read the book. The issue isnt with sexuality or BDSM which is fasley represented anyway.

OMG! Is it really?
I'm totally gonna start on my Elder Scrolls fan fic then. Play the game, write about my experience, change names and a few other things to avoid copyright infringement, make a living. God, life would be great.

Now that is something I would enjoy!
