Free coins/frubals game :D

While I've got the frubal portion outstanding:

This man, a shrewd politician fought a losing war until he sieged a small group of the enemy at a hill. During the time he was setting up fortifications against them, reinforcements for his enemy came and surrounded him. He hastily built a makeshift fortification and triumphed over 50:1 odds while being "surrounded" by the enemy at the top of a hill he surrounded and by the enemy that had surrounded him on the outside.

Who is the general, what battle, and who was he fighting?

I'd like to stick another question out for 2K coins.

The bed of this man was carved out of the massive body of a tree, but he was nobody in particular.

Answer the second question, and you get 2000 coins and frubals. I don't think it'll be too difficult, though :)

EDIT:

The first question is just worth frubals, because it's history not mythology, and well, it's one that I thought was really easy (it may not be, though, and it seems to not be).

The second question is worth 2000 coins and a fruballing, because it's harder and is mythological. I think it's easy, but you have to think outside the box on part of it ;).

I'm honestly not sure about this, but is from The Odyssey? (Odysseus would be the person who was 'noone in particular,' hehee?)

Oh, and I was sad about the first one, since I tried and tried, but couldn't find the answer. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Odysseus it is! His bed was carved from the trunk of a massive tree (and the tree remained intact), and his name to Polyphemus was "Nobody" (until he went and opened his big mouth that is).

Frubals and coins to thee!

I was thinking it was Odysseus too Feathers. He talks about it with Penelope, right? It's carved out of Olive... "These hands hath made this home of ours alone,
Around a huge hundred-year olive tree.
I placed the wall of our shared bedchamber,
I chopped down the tree and carved out the stump.
I shaped our bed from that very anchor"

Goddess, I love that book. I wasn't sure though because my tired mind couldn't comprehend how Odysseus could be "nobody in particular"

Here's two hints:

He's a general/politician with termendous prestige in both areas.
It's in the ancient world, naturally :)

Yep, that's the passage in particular. He's the only person I could think of with a bed like that :p.

You aren't the only one to love that book. I learned Homeric Greek for the Odyessy and the Iliad alone (principally for the Iliad). They are beautiful poems.

I thought about capitalizing it, but I thought that would absolutely give it away, and in lower-case it would serve as something of a distraction :).

And the distraction worked well. I agree that capitalizing it would have given it away so I am glad that you didn't.

Not that this has anything to do with the Odyssey, but have you ever read the story of Gilgamesh? That along with Beowulf are my absolute favorite stories.

Much to my shame, not in its entirity. I've read good bits of it (the death of Enkidu is rather tragic...however I think the king learned more than Enkidu in the encounter :)). I've almost bought it several times, but it's always a cheap paperback, and I know that I can't get a good translation for nothing. As a result, I bide my time.

Do you reccomend any translations in particular?

I'm going to learn Old English for Beowulf and so that I can avoid admitting that I can read over two thousand years of literature in a language I can't well speak, but only about eight hundred of my own language.

I felt so bad for Enkidu... *sniffles* The relationship between he and Gilgamesh reminded me of character from "Hercules" (the series) that I love.
