End Gaza Attacks: US Jews

Many American Jews are demanding an end to the deadly Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, warning that the blitz tarnishes the image of Israel and its chief ally Washington.

"As Americans and as friends and supporters of Israel, we do not believe the continuation of the present military operation is in the best interests of either the US or Israel," Jeremy Ben-Ami, director of the J Street Jewish group, said in a statement on their website.

"Without an immediate end to the present violence, hundreds more will die and be injured in the coming days and weeks, including innocent civilians on both sides."

More than 900 Palestinians have been killed and 4080 more wounded in Israel's three-week onslaught against Gaza, a coastal enclave of 1.6 million people.

At least 8 people, including a child, were killed early Monday in new Israeli attacks.

The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza conflict climbed to more than 1,000 today after nearly three weeks of intensive Israeli bombing and fighting on the ground.

So far, 1,010 Palestinians have been killed, among them 315 children and 95 women, Dr Moawiya Hassanein, the head of Gaza's medical emergency services, told the Guardian. The number of injured after 19 days of fighting stood at 4,700, he said.

As Israeli troops fought on the outskirts of Gaza City after another night of heavy bombing and shelling, diplomatic efforts to end the conflict intensified, with the secretary-general of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, in Cairo for urgent talks. He is calling for an immediate ceasefire.

With the death toll rising, Bolivia's president, Evo Morales, said his country had cut diplomatic relations with Israel. He called for Israeli leaders to face charges at the international criminal court.

The head of the international committee of the Red Cross described the situation in Gaza as "shocking" after visiting a hospital in the territory.

"I saw this dramatic humanitarian situation. There's an increasing number of women and children being wounded and going to hospitals," Jakob Kellenberger said later in Jerusalem, the AFP news agency reported.

"It is shocking. It hurts when you see these wounded people and the types of wounds they have. And I think that the number of people coming to these hospitals is increasing," he said. Kellenberger, who called on both sides to stop targeting civilians, demanded better access for medical teams within Gaza, saying the daily three-hour pause in Israeli operations was not sufficient.

Ban described the toll on civilians in the conflict as "intolerable". He called for "an immediate end to violence in Gaza, and then to the Israeli military offensive and a halt to rocket attacks by Hamas".

His demand followed a meeting with the Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak. The UN chief is also scheduled to travel to Jordan, Israel, the West Bank, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Kuwait, although not Gaza itself.

As well as the Palestinian death toll, 13 Israelis have been killed, including three civilians. At least 35,000 Palestinians are holed up in UN schools operating as emergency shelters. Tens of thousands more are staying with relatives or friends.

About two-thirds of the territory's 1.5 million people have no electricity; the rest have only an intermittent supply, according to the UN.

Sadly Israel will not stop until they feel they do not have to worry about being attacked themselves.

I think the 10 IDF soldiers were also killed by friendly fire. Where is Hamas?

what's friendly fire?

i don't know, Darkendless. you know, for most of people, their children are the most precious things on Earth. Muslim or no Muslim, makes no difference. parents would sacrifice themselves for their kids. i do not think Hamas would disappear after this attack of Israel. even though all members of Hamas were killed, there would be new ones in their place. because of deaths of innocent. there are fathers who lost entire family. can you imagine how it feels? what do you expect those fathers to do? what do Israel government expect who's left behind to do?

i don't know. i really don't know formula for peace.

Friendly fire = Israel shot its own troops.

I think given what you have just said, it making lasting peace with Israel harder than it needs to be. What you said was very nice, but not everyone and especially those who have suffered might think differently about sacrifices.

I think children dying for a war over land is the saddest thing, it does not matter which side they are on. I hate war, it is sad that it has come this this, but not suprising.

i dislike war and what it does to people. yes, does not matter which side they are on.

my points is, what Israel is doing is not gonna solve problem. that's all. i personally can't believe Israeli government did not know this. that's easy to calculate.

Agreed. But i also think that them doing nothing would not have achieved anything either. They have to show Hamas that they will not tolerate terrorism. I would be more angry with Israel if Hamas rockets were landing in IDF/military places. But these rockets are always landing in civilian areas.

then you know where my logic has a failure on this issue. if it is not gonna solve anything then what are those children dying for?

Israeli army is hitting houses and tells media that those houses were used by Hamas. i do not know how they could know such a thing. but if Israel has technology and intelligence to know which houses Hamas use, then why need to use chemical weapons there? those weapons kills more than enough. even if people survive, they still suffer and even have cancer in future. i believe Israeli army do have oppurtunity, equipment and IQ to eliminate Hamas with much more less casualities. i can understand if some unarmed people got killed unknowingly. but 315 children is too many. from outside it really looks like, they just don't care how many civilians die there. they do not value lives of Palestinian at all. they do not want to risk even a single life of an Israeli soldier to fight Hamas. so instead, they use heavy weapons from a distance and kill dozens of innocent people. when you put all of these together you can see this is why Muslims do not believe their intention to be eliminating Hamas alone.

I do not defend Israel, but to them, maybe they're showing the same amount of care for civilians that Hamas shows them? Fair is fair.

In comparison to certain other events from last year, the international reaction has been fairly mild, or so the media would make it seem. If any other nation had shelled the United Nations headquarters, even during a time of war, there would be an "international intervention" on the part of the Western powers.

I wrote a short blog exposing the double standard here:

A stumbling block may be the Hamas charter don't you think, the whole world has had its fill of extremism and thats why Tibet gets the media attention,Tshirts etc.
If you can name anything of any good to come out of something like the Hamas charter please relay it to us,the fruits of Hamas's charter are lying all over Gaza.
Israel are not blameless and the settler problem needs to be rectified but this is also a product of Hamas and previous Palestinian organisations, all have pursued the same goal of destroying Israel which has always ended the same way and its the Palestinian people who pay the price,i think theres enough hypocrisy to last a lifetime there

more and more terrible news coming up...

after Israeli tanks bombed a UN school, Plestinians who were sheltered there try to escape for building and tanks bombed them too.

some fanatics gathered on Gazze border -not to protest- but to dance. fanatics and soldiers danced together as they celebrate 'victory'.

Turkish journalists reported they were attacked by Israeli policemen.

Israeli army asked Reuters about where journalists are and a few minutes later, building where journalist were staying was bombed.

Just minutes after Israeli forces assured Reuters that a 16-story Gaza building used as a media center by correspondents for the international press was not a military target, it was targeted. Much as the United Nations did with its schools, Reuters provided the Israeli military with coordinates for the building to ensure that it wouldn't be hit.
