From the American College of Paediatricians:

Gender Ideology Harms Children
March 21, 2016 – a temporary statement with references. A full statement will be published in summer 2016.

The American College of Pediatricians urges educators and legislators to reject all policies that condition children to accept as normal a life of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex. Facts – not ideology – determine reality.

1. Human sexuality is an objective biological binary trait: “XY” and “XX” are genetic markers of health – not genetic markers of a disorder. The norm for human design is to be conceived either male or female. Human sexuality is binary by design with the obvious purpose being the reproduction and flourishing of our species. This principle is self-evident. The exceedingly rare disorders of sex development (DSDs), including but not limited to testicular feminization and congenital adrenal hyperplasia, are all medically identifiable deviations from the sexual binary norm, and are rightly recognized as disorders of human design. Individuals with DSDs do not constitute a third sex.1

2. No one is born with a gender. Everyone is born with a biological sex. Gender (an awareness and sense of oneself as male or female) is a sociological and psychological concept; not an objective biological one. No one is born with an awareness of themselves as male or female; this awareness develops over time and, like all developmental processes, may be derailed by a child’s subjective perceptions, relationships, and adverse experiences from infancy forward. People who identify as “feeling like the opposite sex” or “somewhere in between” do not comprise a third sex. They remain biological men or biological women.2,3,4

3. A person’s belief that he or she is something they are not is, at best, a sign of confused thinking. When an otherwise healthy biological boy believes he is a girl, or an otherwise healthy biological girl believes she is a boy, an objective psychological problem exists that lies in the mind not the body, and it should be treated as such. These children suffer from gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria (GD), formerly listed as Gender Identity Disorder (GID), is a recognized mental disorder in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-V).5 The psychodynamic and social learning theories of GD/GID have never been disproved.2,4,5

4. Puberty is not a disease and puberty-blocking hormones can be dangerous. Reversible or not, puberty- blocking hormones induce a state of disease – the absence of puberty – and inhibit growth and fertility in a previously biologically healthy child.6

5. According to the DSM-V, as many as 98% of gender confused boys and 88% of gender confused girls eventually accept their biological sex after naturally passing through puberty.5

6. Children who use puberty blockers to impersonate the opposite sex will require cross-sex hormones in late adolescence. Cross-sex hormones (testosterone and estrogen) are associated with dangerous health risks including but not limited to high blood pressure, blood clots, stroke and cancer.7,8,9,10

7. Rates of suicide are twenty times greater among adults who use cross-sex hormones and undergo sex reassignment surgery, even in Sweden which is among the most LGBQT – affirming countries.11 What compassionate and reasonable person would condemn young children to this fate knowing that after puberty as many as 88% of girls and 98% of boys will eventually accept reality and achieve a state of mental and physical health?

8. Conditioning children into believing a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful is child abuse. Endorsing gender discordance as normal via public education and legal policies will confuse children and parents, leading more children to present to “gender clinics” where they will be given puberty-blocking drugs. This, in turn, virtually ensures that they will “choose” a lifetime of carcinogenic and otherwise toxic cross-sex hormones, and likely consider unnecessary surgical mutilation of their healthy body parts as young adults.

I think it is hard for some people to say things like this today because of fear of backlashes, mostly from liberals, and keep quiet about it. This is very disconcerting, as it seems many young deaths could be prevented simply by giving honour to facts, over ideology.

The "biological" definition of sex isn't as straightforward as they're making it sound (honestly, the description of it in the article is straight-up inaccurate), and these doctors are being more than a little insensitive towards an alleged 14% of the global population.

Who made you an authority above the medics and psychiatrists? I'm pretty sure they know what they are talking about.

Insensitive? If someone has a medical issue I should think it needs to be addressed, especially if it can prevent needless hormone pumping and even suicide.

I think it's important to note that this group of physicians holds a conservative ideology so their views regarding this issue are not surprising.

Here's their views on marriage. This page is quite telling in regard to their overall philosophy. They aren't wholly objective or neutral regarding human sexuality.

http://www.acpeds.org/parents/marriage-matters-2

"By convention since the dawn of humankind, by historic precedent, and by accepted legal and social definition, the above definition has described the entity we call “marriage.” Recently, a small but vocal minority of our population, aided by a biased media, has waged a relentless campaign to radically alter this normative and natural social structure by bending the definition to the wants of homosexual adults. If this campaign is successful there will be no brake as our society moves toward an era in which the institution of marriage will become meaningless."

That makes no sense. Sexuality has nothing to do with chromosomes, sex, or gender. And obviously sexuality is not a binary, given there are bisexuals and asexuals, and a whole slew of fetishes and kinks that make non-sexual things into sexual passions.
These two points I lumped together because they are not taking into consideration the fact that there are differences in brain structures between cisgendered people and transsexuals, with the brain of a transsexual not only having their own distinctive appearance but more resembling the brain of their identified sex than the brain of their birth-assigned sex.
4. Puberty is not a disease and puberty-blocking hormones can be dangerous. Reversible or not, puberty- blocking hormones induce a state of disease – the absence of puberty – and inhibit growth and fertility in a previously biologically healthy child.6
In this case, very typically, the patient has already been living full time as their identified sex. It's not something they can just one day suddenly decide and be put on such medications.
5. According to the DSM-V, as many as 98% of gender confused boys and 88% of gender confused girls eventually accept their biological sex after naturally passing through puberty.5
The full summary of the point is that it isn't unusual for a child to have a phase where they may state they are of the opposite sex, but it's shortly lived and they outgrow it. The difference between this phase and someone with gender dysphoria is that gender dysphoria is persistent, with someone typically being cognizant of the difference between their physical sex and identified sex at a very early age.
This is misleading, as even naturally produced hormones come with risks. It is also not mentioning that hormone replacement therapy is life long, but the suppressants are dropped and hormone dosage lowered post-op (after the testicles are removed from MtF and ovaries removed from FtM).
This is greatly misleading. Transsexuals are at a higher risk of suicide, but as a group, especially when looking at ones who have had genital surgery, those committing suicide very frequently have mood disorders.
There is no such conditioning. In fact, many transsexuals, especially MtF, try to condition themselves out of it (sports, military, womanizing, body building, and so on), but it doesn't work. And they say mutilation, but a post-op vagina looks so much like a regular one that even to a gynecologist it may appear no different than a regular post-hysterectomy vagina.

Interesting that someone can be an MD and be so objectively wrong about this issue. What do they propose we do with all the ones who have the wrong "binary" for their reproductive organs? Or intersexuals?

Zanga [the founder] has described ACPeds as a group "with Judeo-Christian, traditional values that is open to pediatric medical professionals of all religions who hold true to the group's core beliefs: that life begins at conception; and that the traditional family unit, headed by a different-sex couple, poses far fewer risk factors in the adoption and raising of children." The organization's view on parenting is at odds with the position of the American Academy of Pediatrics, which holds that sexual orientation has no correlation with the ability to be a good parent and to raise healthy and well-adjusted children.

I suspected as much. Lumping sexuality together with chromosomes and having such misleading information and leaving out so much made me suspect they are of such a Conservative ideology.

And I forgot to add the actual rates of side effects from hormone replacement are pretty low. The side-effects can be severe, and the treatment is carried out under medical supervision in America, but in some places there is no such supervision and I have yet to hear of any side-effect epidemics striking their transsexual communities where these treatments can even be available OTC.
And, I also forgot to include that the way their points are worded it should be impossible for the Hijra or "two-spirits" to exist, but some cultures have not only have a "third sex," they may have four or more separate genders.

I'd expect better grammar from a supposed authority.
Anyway, I find too many suspiciously certain claims that things are either one way or the other.
It reminds me of ancient views that homosexuality was a curable mental illness.
My impression is that the medical community has a fer piece to go in sorting out trans scenarios.

I have been reading a great deal about transsexuals and it seems most of the people involved have other severe mental issues and addiction. Do we ignore that? I find it troubling myself as far as acceptance.

Just Googling around it seems most medical groups are related to religious ones, and I find that it is going to be hard to think that doctors are wrong just for those beliefs. They maybe are disagreeing because it is vague?
