Ghosts of Japanese Tsunami Victims Trying to Get to Destroyed Homes

Here's some news for those of us interested in the paranormal:

Taxi drivers in Japan say they’ve picked up ghosts of victims of the 2011 tsunami.

At least seven drivers claim passengers have entered their vehicle only to vanish into thin air before they reach their destination.

One driver described a young woman dressed in a coat climbing into his cab near Ishinomaki Station and telling him: “Please go to the Minamihama (district).” In response, the driver noted that the area was “almost empty,” and asked her if she was sure she wanted to go there, reported the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

The woman replied in a trembling voice: “Have I died?”

When the driver turned around to look at her, no one was there.

Another driver, in his forties, said a young man climbed into his cab and asked to go to “Hiyoriyama mountain.”

The driver set off, but when he pulled over he realized the passenger had disappeared.

Source:

Tohoku Gakuin University senior Yuka Kudo investigated the phenomena for her graduation thesis and found that no fewer than SEVEN taxi drivers were willing to share similar experiences!

In each case, the driver picked up a young passenger only to have them disappear mid-ride!

Interestingly, there's a record of each occurrence as the drivers actually started the meter running — and ended up having to pay the empty fares themselves…

I, believing in such things, think this makes sense based on what I understand about ghosts. Younger people that die violently are the most common to appear as ghosts. As these events happened only a short time after the tsunami they were probably still confused as to what happened to them an had the energy to materialize. These seem to be live entities unlike Civil War battlefields where soldiers are seen moving forward with no awareness of the modern setting. The latter seem to be a different ghost phenomena called residual haunting.

Skeptics will no doubt claim hoax or unsatisfactory evidence but they must wonder sometimes I'm sure.

Thoughts on this and on ghosts in general?

Ehhh. Here's the thing about Japan; the people tend to be extremely over-worked, forgoing vacations and proper amounts of sleep and what not. It's a cultural thing. Without sleep, you start to hallucinate. Mix that with "environmental suggestion", that is being reminded of traumatic events that took place in an area, and you've got a recipe for this sort of situation.

Wouldn't surprise me. It would surprise me more if this didn't happen. Probably happens in New Orleans with the victims of Katrina, too. But NOLA is so haunted by centuries of ghosts, anyway. Then there's that 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami... :(

OK, but ghost stories are in every culture. And after enough anecdotal claims from enough cultures I believe something real is going on. But we are probably on the two sides that will never meet. So, we will carry on with different worldviews.

Not trying to say it didn't happen or that it never happens, just that in this instance I think there's more reason to accept the mundane rather than extraordinary explanation.

True, very true. Mounting anecdotal evidence (whether it be ghost stories, NDEs, UFOs, alien abductions, etc.) requires some kind of explanation.

Ghost stories are plentiful in Japan. The stories related in the OP remind me of the vanishing hitchhikers motorists in America have reported encountering. A good friend's uncle has a vanishing hitchhiker story that he claims happened to him while in San Francisco.

The thing about that is, even if it is a hallucination, it doesn't mean it's not "real". We're not able to say what is real or unreal with certainty, really.

I'd love to hear that story!
