Gnosticism and Taoism

Careful there standing_alone, as a Gnostic - Ashley is under the protection of my badger army, navy, airforce and our new orbital space offence platform.

If you mock Gnosticism or a Gnostic, you'd better prepare yourself for the unpleasant smelling consequences.

Hah! I live in Wisconsin, which is called "The Badger State." I'm sure I can muster my own badger military to take out yours!

Pfff, although we have great respect for the military capabilities of the US badger population.
They cannot compete with good old British badgers and our centuries old training regime.

Plus we've been training some of our best with the ninja masters of Japan. Boris the Badger (codename Giggles) can move silently upon his enemy and slit their throats, using the patented Halcyon Industries Badger Blade, before they can say, "Cor blimey".

Hah! You know the U.S. has far more superior military capabilities than Britain.

This is just one regiment of my Badger militia! There are plenty more soldiers where these came from!

Also, my Badger military, besides being under command of me, is also under the command of Bucky Badger! Certainly much tougher than a badger named Boris and codenamed Giggles - which is a sissy name! Also, my badger military is cheered on by special Badger Broads. And see that float stating "Big Ten Champions?" That's for the previous ten monsterous battles my badger military fought and won with honor!

You're freakishly human looking badgers don't scare me. I've genetically engineered my badgers to grow 20 times their normal size.

And some of our best have been trained in the harshest conditions in the universe. Here you can see Dave (codename Softsocks) enduring the freezing temeratures and lack of oxygen of the planet Mars, with a smile on his face and a spring in his step.

Hah! Look at that sissy badger, in his overalls with that geeky kid! Definately not a killing machine like my badgers!

My badger army is equiped with improvised explosive devices that appear to be simply cheese! And my badgers are 25 times their normal size. Did you not see General Bucky Badger in my previous post?

Well, since this battle is going to be on planet Earth, such capabilities are useless! And you want to talk about harsh conditions, my badger army endures the harsh Wisconsin winters every single year!

Stinky cheese eater, eh?! Oh, just wait until you're blown to bits by one of my badger army's cheese-like improvised explosive devices!

Is there already a thread like this? oh well, the mods can delete it...

Okay the question: So there has been some comparisons from Gnosticism to Buddhism, but what about Taoism? Gnostics is a lot like the western religions easternized. Basically the "mystic" side of most religions.

There are TONS of comparisons to balance, the One, and inner knowing.... and.... stuff that i cant remember.... but what do you think?

random question: does being a mystic make you a gnostic... and vice versa?
Hi Buttons, I think this is the thread you were referring to in my KOG thread. :D

Anyway, it's already long so hope you don't mind if I reply as I read through it. Forgive me if I say things that have already been said.

With respect to the above, no, not all mytics are automatically gnostics. Some of the most famous Christian mystics were quite orthodox, although they have also often been misunderstood. St. John of the Cross was subjected to persecution because few of his peers understood what he was saying.

I think it's an interesting topic -- that's why I'm looking at the thread -- but while I know a little about historical Gnostic sects like the Marcionites, the Manichees, and the Cathars, I know next to nothing about modern Gnosticism, and I'm not entirely sure what people on RF mean when they say they're Gnostic. I imagine there are others in the same boat.

Maybe an introductory thread, where the Gnostics here tell a little about their faith, would help.

Yes, this is what I was looking for too, Midnight Blue. Is there a modern gnostic sect that is not related to Christiantiy and the relatively recent research into the Gnostic Gospels? My understanding is that gnosticism predates Christianity, and also that gnosticism believes that the creator God is evil, and that all things related to the flesh and material world are evil.

not a problem, this thread was meant for different and similar points of view. I was just kicking around some ideas. Feel free to comment on anything and everything you like! *smiles*

True. The point of that question in particular, "are all mystics gnostic?" from the fact that I saw mysticism and gnosticism to be the same... i realize now, though, that they are different. Gnostics are mystic, but that doesnt mean all mystics are gnostic.

That's one of the reasons I like orthodox faith, it gives way to mysticism. and i like it. ;)

*sigh* I didnt think about how confusing this thread was going to be for people who dont already know what I mean....

Its hard to explain.... I dont mean gnostic as in the mythology of it. I simply mean the "inner knowing" belief of it. No doctrine or allegorical mythology involved. JUST that inner knowing, or understanding belief... compared to Philosophical Taoism.

Openly admitting here, I dont know ANYTHING about taoism... as a religion OR as a philosophy. I'm just looking for opinions. If you dont know anything about gnosticism, it's probably best to not comment... although i love your ideas very much. :)

Sorry for the confusion.... I'll work on this more when i get our of hell...

OK, nevermind! :D
