GOP: Autism is god's wrath on America

World Wide Atheists: Chicago GOP hopeful: Autism and dementia are God’s punishments for LGBT rights (video)

This is one of the reasons why I could never be a Republican. If this was an isolated incident, I wouldn't be so bothered by it. But this is just the latest in a long line of religious Republicans spouting nonsense that just makes me cringe, and makes me sad to call myself an American, because we still consider this kind of idiocy prime candidates to help lead this country. As an Autistic, with Autistic kids, I'm frankly shocked and appalled at this ind of insensitive, and quite frankly, idiotic nonsense. Is it ever going to get better for people who aren't rich white Christians?

Looks more like an Anti-theist site than an Atheist site but I digress...

I've never heard of any political or religious group that did not have it's fair share of crazies,
I understand the disdain for this womans opinions, But her opinions don't reflect that entire party or that entire religion.

I agree, It's shocking and appalling. I just don't take it personally and I believe that people know that these are just her opinions and are not a reflection on Christianity

Reagan sure did his country a favor when he formed a coalition of the jewelry rattling rich and the bible thumping fundamentalists. And no, I don't mean all rich are jewelry rattlers, nor that all fundamentalists are bible thumpers. That's missing the point.

When I was growing up, a lot of fundamentalists refused to vote because they thought of it as "too worldly". Reagan changed that. But they were right all along: Voting is too worldly for many of them.

I couldn't find where she said that in the video.

That said, I'm not sure if I could vote for either one of these candidates.

Honestly, the Religious Right is one of the worst things to ever happen to American politics.

Only the ones in power. That's worse.

I'm sure any sufficiently large group has its share of deluded, fools and crazies...

... but how come the GOP and other American conservatives have been having such a hard time telling them to get real and give way for the sane people for such a long time?

IIRC it goes back to the election of Ronald Reagan, although at the time hardly anyone would expect it to grow to these proportions.

I don't fault the GOP to have crazies. I fault it for something much worse, the lack of desire and/or courage to refuse to submit to them.

Heck, these days Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann are taken seriously. Freaking Conservapedia, a satire website if I ever saw one, is taken seriously.

If that is what the GOP has to offer, then it can't hope for anything better than a mercy killing to rescue its dignity.

We see it the other way around. A number of Rabbis would stand in respect when a person with Down Syndrome would enter the room.

So what is the solution here? Fundies not being able to vote? I could get behind testing voters for their ability to make a decision or who the speaker of the house is.

I have a question, are any of you calling to abolish the GOP? Do many of you want a one party system in this country?

Dang, she's got nutty beliefs. Saying that tornadoes are proof of God's wrath. I would say she spouts the kind of rhetoric that is reminiscent of Westboro if the story is true. If it means anything, Westboro is not popular with the majority of rich white Christians.

Also, I've known plenty of progressive rich white Christians who vote straight ticket Democrat.

The Religious Right is another breed, but one can't even brush all Christian conservatives with the same brush...see the Amish and the Mennonites, who are extremely conservative, but have no desire to engage in political advances of their beliefs. They are generally highly respected. And I've enjoyed doing business with them.

FWIW, I think any comments about people on the Autism Spectrum that is prejudiced and insulting are atrocious. I'm with you since I have a 16 year old son on the spectrum.

Because some Pubs believe some loopy unscientific things, the whole should group should be
made a pariah. But since some Dems are also bonkers, eg, believing that big gun magazines
can't be reloaded (twice I've heard that from'm now), this party should also be ousted.
Even a few of us Libertarian types believe wildly crazy stuff, so we need to be squelched.
Isn't there some cute quote about removing planks from eyes?

How well would our society fare without high functioning autistics, aka "Silicon Valley Syndrome"?
The neurotypical masses need engineers.

The alternative is that the GOP could stop putting forward goggle eyed lunatics as political candidates and expecting anybody to take them seriously. No need to stop fundies from voting.

The way I see it, both the problem and the possible cures actually have very little to do with political parties or voting at all.

The causes are social in nature, and the political consequences are just that - consequences.

How well established is it that Autism is necessary or at least frequent among those segments of people? I hear of it increasingly often, yet I have a hard time believing that it is quite so. Is it even possible for Autism to happen quite that often?

If nothing else, that makes me doubt that Autism is very easy to delimit and diagnose - or that it has very many consequences in and of itself.

I have no statistics, but if one looks at a wide autism spectrum which would include Asperger's, then you have a large population.
An interesting article....

Though she is running in the Republican primary, is there any evidence that she is supported by the Republican Party in that district?
