GOP rallies around Trump following FBI search of his estate

Grim news on the Trump front:

The GOP push to portray Trump as the victim of a politicized Justice Department ignored the potential criminal misconduct that justified the search in the eyes of a federal judge. It overlooked Trump’s role in hiring now-vilified FBI Director Chris Wray, who also served as a high-ranking official in a Republican-led Justice Department. The Biden White House, meanwhile, said it had no prior knowledge of the search.

But the robust defense serves as a fresh reminder of the former president’s enduring grip on the GOP, driven by an ability to use a sense of grievance among many Republican voters toward government and other institutions. Trump tapped into that animosity to overcome two impeachments and the fallout from an insurrection. His allies said Tuesday that the FBI search would only strengthen his position again...

The overwhelming majority — from House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy to DeSantis, accused the Biden administration of “weaponizing” the Justice Department and ignored any potential wrongdoing by Trump.

“The GOP now fully embraces the notion that Trump should, indeed, be above the law, and that Trump 2.0 will be a bonfire of vengeance,” wrote Republican commentator Charlie Sykes, a frequent Trump critic.

If a large portion of the Republican party endorses this, what will happen now? I have no idea.

A democracy where more than half the people don't like democracy is toast. Burnt toast.
I also don't know if the US voters realize that the 2024 election may be the last in US history if they so wish.

The republicans consistently find themselves at a crossroads, and every time they make the mistake of selling their soul to the Devil.

I don't see how the republicans can believe this is a sound road to election. It's almost as if they are daring citizens to vote for them. They need to let Trump go and face his legal consequences.

They were 100% all in on the FBI going after Hillary. But of course their extremely sensitive natures cannot tolerate the shoe being on the other foot.

Add to that fanatical confirmation bias and we see the result absolute fanatical devotion to Il Duce Trump

I think what matters for fair judgement is looking for motives simply because if there is no motive then there is no sane reason to engage or for anything significant to happen.

Fact is that democrats hold the power and have leverage over Trump.

Trump wants to nominate for 2024 elections and that's his motive.
Motive of GOP is 2024 elections thus they support Trump but also need to prevent denigration of Trump by democrats,
because if he is denigrated then he's not appropriate to become president.
Democrats have 2 strong motives:
1) they want to stay in power and denigrating trump is a good option for them to hold position
2) if they lose elections Trump may return them favor and politically persecute them for abusing their power

Therefore what will happen is either Trump in jail or finned or democrats lose elections and face political persecution.

The president not knowing a raid was going to happen on another former president?

You actually believe that lie,?

The real GOP is just using Trump to "energize the idiot base" before an upcoming election. They couldn't care less about Trump. He's become a liability to them. Once the midterms are over he's irrelevant. They'll be grooming their next would-be idiot-king for the next presidential election.

“A bonfire of vengeance.” I like that.

Though, it’s more like… an inferno.

It's the D.I.S.C.O. Inferno, the Democrats Investigating Suspected Criminal Operative's Inferno!

Trump has had some opposition within the Republican Party, and it appears that some (such as Pence and McConnell) have been wanting to distance themselves from Trump and move the party past the Trump era. But this FBI raid threw a monkey wrench into that process, and now it's gotten more complicated.

It might still be salvageable, as long as Garland and Wray step forward and explain themselves, "and do so immediately," as Pence and McConnell have demanded. Waiting and playing the silent game is not helping the Democrats, nor does it help the cause of justice.

The way I see it, either they have enough evidence to convict Trump or they don't. If they do have enough to convict, then they should have gotten on with it a long time ago. If they don't have enough to convict, then they should have toned down the rhetoric and refrained from making melodramatic grandstand plays, such as the Jan. 6 hearings and this FBI raid. If it's really only about justice, dispassionate and apolitical, then why the need for all the drama and suspense? Are they running a government or writing a blockbuster movie? Do they want to be taken seriously or don't they?

Oh, they love democracy. But their cult believes
that it was stolen from their prophet. The remedy
is violent seizure of power....or at least threatening
it from the safety of their keyboards.

Democrats & Republicans....every time their
President gets caught doing illegal things, they
whine about persecution. And then with bi-partisan
unity, they fail to do anything of substance. It's a
rotten shame that Nixon, Clinton, & Trump never
saw any prison time. It sends the message that
the law doesn't apply to them.

And that is the moment they don't like democracy any more.
When winning is more important than the voting process, the party is undemocratic and unconstitutional. In Germany the GOP would be banned from elections.

Not if they really believe that Trump had his election stolen.
You'd be attributing the wrong belief & motive for their mayhem.

I don't think Trump believes he won.
He's just manipulating the useful fools in his cult.
You forgot Bush Jr.
Other Presidents could be prosecuted too.
But I stuck to clear cut cases that were actually made.

Not if they really believe that Trump had his election stolen.
Especially if they really believe that the election was stolen - against the assurance of all the election supervisors (dems and pubs) and all the courts. If they can believe that, they have no trust in democracy - and no love for it.

What needs to be accounted for is that a very similar situation over less serious matters occurred when Hillary Clinton was investigated by the FBI over the email scandal. I don't quite remember such widespread calls for violence.

Remember, these are the folks that were chanting "Lock Her Up" at Trump rallies.

Personally, I support investigating and persecuting political leaders as long as it is fairly done, and I see no reason to suspect this hasn't been fairly done.

I am biased however, and I find the sycophantic support for Donald Trump (of all people!) disturbing and...surreal. This is Donald Trump for goodness sake!
