Green Lantern- The critics are dead wrong

I for one am curious about the Man of Steel movie they are making. It would be nice to have a good Superman movie.

Being so powerful, it's hard to write a good script for him, but not impossible. They can do it decently for animated versions, but drop the ball on live action blockbusters.

It's great. Just got back from seeing it at a drive-in theater (my first time in one, and let me tell you; it's a FAR better experience than an indoor theater), and I felt that it was a great movie. Sure, it's not on the same level as Dark Knight, but as far as superhero movies go, this was pretty darned good. It was well-paced, for the most part, the acting was good, and the characters were fun. Sure, it didn't go into the meaning of life, but since Green Lantern isn't a hero that's prevalent in mainstream consciousness, I think it would have been inappropriate to go into such things.

Therefore, this movie does what it needs to do: be somewhat mindless escapism.

The critics are wrong in this case.

I never listen to critics. One of my favorite movies, Curly Sue, was panned by critics about 20 or so years ago. :) I'll have to see it (Green Lantern) when it comes out on video, as my husband loves The Green Lantern (The old one, but I'm sure he'll like the new one)

For it's time the original Christopher Reeves Superman was great (seems like most people at the time agreed).

I think if they get a few screen writers with a decent imagination and a personal interest in the genre they should be able to come up with something worthwhile.

It seems people did like it back then. Maybe it's a cultural difference, but I don't see why it was considered all that great. It was original, though.

The newer one, Superman Returns, was pretty lame in my opinion. Superman is experienced now. He's returning, he's been through this before. Lex Luther is there, he's been through this before. And what happens?

Superman confronts Lex Luther by just walking right up to him, not stopping to think there might be Kryptonite somewhere, and gets beat. Out of every possible story available to them, the writers decided to make this modern sequel in the most cliche, generic fashion- Superman does some stuff, Lex has a plan, Superman tries to stop that plan but falls for the old Kryptonite trick, and then with some help, is able to win.

When are they coming out with another blade movie? Wesley Snipes needs money to pay the IRS
heh. Movies like the Hulk are not dependent on individual actors to carry them. Hulk is a franchise, just a hunch but I'm betting that the success of the Avengers was never a factor.

For it's time the special effects were unprecedented. Also, Reeves looked and acted the part incredibly well. There was just enough tongue in cheek to fill up the gaps between the action scenes (Gene Hackman's Lex Luther), but not too much to the point of turning it into an unacknowledged spoof (like most of the Batman flims before Batman begins).

The newer one, Superman Returns, was pretty lame in my opinion.

I watched the first 20 minutes and turned it off, shaking my head. :p

didn't bother sticking around to find out. :p

No, within the comic movie genre, how does it stand?

AH. Gotcha.

It's got NOTHING on Dark Knight, of course, but, hey, even most mainstream movies don't come close to that one.

But as far as superhero movies go, it's up there with the first two Spiderman movies IMO.

I hear tell it will be the guy that played Erkyl(SP?), Jamaal White...

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG IS GOING TO BE BLADE!?!?! (never saw family matters, never heard of urkle until a few years ago, so as far as I'm concerned, Jaleel White is Sonic.)

That is... well... speaking as a huge fan of those days of Sonic... dumb. Honestly can't see that voice in the role.

Oh, then your take is that it's really good. (never mind the chick flick comment):D Thats a pretty high standard. Would you say it's for a young crowd, or does it rise above that?

Unless the next Superman movie has Darkseid in it, I'm not interested.

I like Superman as a hero, but Hollywood has not been kind to him at all, adheering to the image of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor that's outdated.

I'd say it's good for all ages. (Yeah, the only other thing I know Toby McGuire from is Seabiscut, which I liked at the time, so I thought he did great.) Both kids and adults can enjoy this one.

And another thing, am I the only one on this forum who didn't really mind Bale's performance of Batman? Sure, he's no Michael Keaton and CERTAINLY no Kevin Conroy, (who is, IMO, the definitive voice of Batman), but other than the fact that his growly voice is a bit hard to understand, it doesn't bother me that much.

BTW, as an aside, I should point out that, while I do love superheroes(I generally prefer DC over Marvel) and do have some knowledge of more famous comic events, though I haven't actually read any, I don't actually read comics. I do, however, highly recommend any of the animated films that DC has been putting out lately.

Yes same here, although I prefer Marvel by a long shot. I keep up on certain characters but it's not like I check everything out constantly.:D I take breaks, come back after a few weeks, and see whats happened. TBH I prefer comics over movies.

I probably would too; I'm just intimidated by the decades of continuity to learn. ^_^

:D Haha, no, I agree with you! The continuity is not as interesting to me as the current storylines, if that makes any sense. I just pick and choose. The continuity is for collectors I think, or people who keep abreast of every development.

And I hve no clue as to which heroes/villains are marvel and which are DC....
Shows you how much I pay attention to that sort of thing.

You read my mind. Darkseid is awesome, and Superman's top villain.

In 2010 DC released a high-quality animated film called Superman/Batman Apocalypse that had Darkseid as the primary villain. It's useful from time to time to have a villain that can just straight-up beat superman in a fight rather than rely on repetitive plot devices like kryptonite, but since Darkseid is also smart and has minions, they can make the plot more complex too.

I thought the movie itself was fairly decent (Batman was important but kind of corny and out of place in it), until the surprise end-fight which I really liked, and therefore I ended up liking the movie a lot.
