Gun Pics

I've shot an M16AI. Particularly lightweight, with a light kick back. It feels unnatural. The AK, well that makes a man grow a brain, a heart, and a set of testicles.

My Dad has fired an AK-47 back when he was in Kosovo, he said that it's incredibly loud and that you only have to think about pulling the trigger - because it is so sensitive.

Which do you prefer, the M16 or the AK-47 - in terms of the capabilities of the gun etc?
The AK47 has much more power and is much more reliable. The M16 will get the job done but you have to take really good care of it. The AK47 is kind of like a Glock in rifle form in that it will fire under any circumstances. So, I would take the AK47 if choosing between those two.

And you were in the Army, to my knowledge the US still use the M16 as their standard assault rifle, right? Did you guys ever mention that whilst you were out in the field, that you preferred the AK etc?

Oh, there were complaints about malfunctions and worry as well. The hope was that when yours jammed you weren't alone. That and hopefully the guy in the turret with the .50 cal took care of things before they got too close.

Do you think then, that the US Army should just make their own version of the AK-47? Surely the welfare and combat potential of the soldiers is the most important thing.

The M-16s jamming problems are overrated. The problems with the early '60s models have largely been fixed. You have to get it pretty dirty or not clean it for it to jam. It's a much more modern, versitile weapon than the AK.
Here's an interesting comparison: We compare the AK-47 and the M-16

Dust1in, the "light kick" you mentioned is due to the M-16s lighter ammunition and directly actuated bolt carrier. It doesn't have the mass of a seperate piston jerking back and forth.

Paul Rusco, it sounds like the gun your father fired need a trigger pull adjustment. Too light can be dangerous.

The AK-47 is not copyrighted, as it was made in Soviet Russia were intellectual property was open for everyone to use. There are many variations already. The inventor still gets a small pension from the Russian government.

Ruger "Old Army" Stainless Steal Black Powder 6 shot revolver.

Versatile, powerful, accurate, reliable.

I used to do air charters around central Australia and the Top End.
This gun was compact, a rifle is too bulky for small planes.
I could easily take out a Crock, Buffalo, Kangaroo or wild pig.

You can use any available projectile and match heads for propellant if necessary, good survival weapon.

If I wanted an general rifle the AK47 or lever action Marlin 444 would be my choice.

Cheers

Well, I can see the action, but what's the rest of the gun look like? What's the calibre?, barrel length? Twist or bored? Rifled or smoothbore?, &c

I could be wrong, but that looks like a Brown Bess. It was a smoothbore flintlock musket favored by the British. It fired a .75 caliber ball of lead. The barrel lengths varied over the years from 26 - 46 inches. The shortest ones were issued to cavalry men. The short one weighed almost 7 1/2 pounds. The rest were in the neighborhood of ten pounds. Oh, and for those that don't know, we knocked the crud out of the British and took America away from them in this era. ;)

It's a Flintlock I think.

It's obviously a flintlock, and the D-ring on the trigger guard indicates it's a long gun,(that is, a musket, not a pistol). But unless you can interpret the maker's marques, that's all you know about it. All you can see in the photo is the action -- the 'lock'.

'Buck and ball' actually. Round ball plus three buckshot. Not much accuracy, which is why massed firepower is needed. Strictly military, I prefer rifled guns from 'Kentucky' rifle onward. Except shotguns of course but those are always smoothbore.

Example of a 'Kentucky' (Pennsylvania) rifle. Notice the double trigger.

Speaking of rifles, this is by far the most fun gun I've fired, a 10 pounder Parrot rifle.

'Polly wants a cracker!' :D

That's a 3 inch bore. Ten pound projectile, one pound black powder sends it.
