I'm not celebrating any exploitative, militaristic empire that's been riding roughshod over the world for most of its history.

All nationalistic holidays are problematical. Just don't let the thought of it spoil the day off from work and the BBQ.

Same goes with nationalized religious holidays that have nothing to do with your own religion (or lack of religion). Enjoy the day off from work and have dinner at a Chinese restaurant (which is what a lot of Jews do at Christmas).

Could celebration include wishing for and expressing support for constructive criticism, introspection, and improvement?

I see that as one of the primary dividing lines between healthy patriotism and excessive nationalism or chauvinism.

If you protest on July 4th, the most people whose attention you'll get are those who will want to break your head for being unpatriotic on "America's birthday." Same as if you say anything about "Jesus's birthday" being everywhere and everyday from Thanksgiving through New Year's, you'll be accused of "waging war on Christmas." :)

Yeah, it would be sort of like going to someone's anniversary party and asking them how things were going with their marriage counselor. :p

Meh, my celebratory activities are more cultural than patriotic.

For me, it’s a time to enjoy being with family and seeing the look of joy on my granddaughter’s face as she sees sparkly fireworks, many of which she’ll experience for the very first time.

It's about the 3 Fs
Food, family, friends, & fireworks.
Patriotism & militarism are optional.
But exploitation is wonderful.
It happens in every economy.
And nobody does it better than
running gods of capitalism.

We have been blessed with and enjoy many, many freedoms in the U.S. For that I am very grateful. Nevertheless, I pray for repentance from all the greed, corruption, evil, and war-mongering this country perpetuates here and around the globe. I think at this point America is in a self-destruct mode and on the decline, as the Roman Empire fell and others throughout history and biblical prophecy. We’ll see, but one thing I do know is that this world and its governments are temporary. And this world is not my home, nor where my allegiance is.
