We have been blessed with and enjoy many, many freedoms in the U.S. For that I am very grateful. Nevertheless, I pray for repentance from all the greed, corruption, evil, and war-mongering this country perpetuates here and around the globe. I think at this point America is in a self-destruct mode and on the decline, as the Roman Empire fell and others throughout history and biblical prophecy. We’ll see, but one thing I do know is that this world and its governments are temporary. And this world is not my home, nor where my allegiance is.
That said, a day where an entire country gets to put its problems and disagreements on hold and spend some time outside for fun and fireworks in a world momentarily full of music, laughter and the smell of barbecue . . .

We are not equally free, we are losing freedoms, fascism is rising.
But cheers to the decline of an empire!

It's not the entire country. Today marks the anniversary of a failed promise for some and they don't celebrate it. Historically it's even more of a white person's holiday.

Life is full of failed promises. It’s not just in the U.S where this occurs. I can guarantee you that thousands and thousands of people here of all backgrounds celebrate the freedoms they enjoy here, not just whites. That’s a ridiculous assumption.

I said "gets to". I didn't say has to.

I'm guessing more people care about the day off than they do about the history.

It really should be.
I don't even remember which lame arsched
song is officially our anthem. But it's even
worse than the pledge (cuz it lasts longer.)

Hey, if they don't go for the Team America
song, how about "Oh, Canuckistan"?

Despite detractors who find any pride in America worthy of distain, I think it's healthy to celebrate a country's noblest ideals and improvements despite the existence of historical or ongoing injustices that don't live up to those ideals.

Happy Independence Day, America! :)

It is still the best place in the world to live (many of us).
And it's nice not having King Charles as our nominal ruler.

I think people miss the point. It's not about the government or politics. It's about celebrating your homeland - the people, the land, the ideals we have, our culture, etc. It's about the country coming into existence. If you're a citizen, you're an American and this is your home, regardless of politics, ethnicity, etc. The government is not America, although it seems people have a lot of problems separating the two.

I can relate to what you said because I feel similarly about my country and its shortcomings. I love it, appreciate its rich history that spans millennia, and see immense potential for posperity and improvement, but I also know I need to relocate due to certain current circumstances. I believe genuine patriots must be open to constructive criticism and want their country to improve.

I hope you have a happy Independence Day!

I just see it as “fireworks and day off work day” and that’s plentiful :)

Excerpted (David Letterman's list).....

TOP TEN REASONS THE BRITISH LOST THE COLONIES

10. Hard to shoot straight with sissified powdered wig falling in your eyes.
9. Wanted to just lose New Jersey but got carried away.
8. Colonists on steroids.
7. Spent too much time guessing who's gay in the royal family.
6. British diet: Tea and Crumpets; American diet: Raw Squirrel and Whiskey
5. Serious problems with snuff abuse.
4. Lots of painful poking accidents trying to put on those pointy hats of theirs.
3. Americans had Batman.
2. Wanted to get first draft choice.
1. Uninspiring British battle cry: "Let's win this for our swishy, inbred monarch!"
