The Disco error was the peak as far as pop is concerned. I count Rap and R&B as pop these days, there doesn't seem to be the genuine attempt to make quality music in those genre's much anymore.

When I was the praying sort, I used to pray for every parent with teenagers, that they would not be inflicted with the monotonous sexed up rubbish that seems to plague us now. Educate your kids early so they learn what good music is.

Are you saying that disco was good? If so, you have to be kidding! Disco was limp-dick, musical puke. The Bee-Gees sucked!

Alot of 70's songs were sexed up quit abit. The content is the same, just more vulgar, and the sound is very different.

Definitely sexed up, but sexed up in a.... less vulgar sense. Now it's just.... well, soulless.

That's what it is. Music hasn't got a soul anymore. Guess it's cos the artists all sell theirs. Knockout

No she doesn't.
Mind you, she's at my place at the moment, and I have several, so I'd be 'shh' for a couple of days until she gets home to her own weaponless place.:D

On the other hand, you have bands like Velvet Revolver. Their gig at Live8 simply melted me. I do not think I have heard a more powerful set... of raw energy... since Led Zeppelin. Slither is an amazing track. (And no... I was not really aware of just who Velevet Revolver even was prior to seeing their performance. It is obviously Guns'n'Roses minus the wilted Axel Rose. Talk about an ego that grew too large for their playpen.)

I am so f*ing sick to death of you limp-dick (to use your own words) Americans who have no idea what you're talking about. Knockout The Bee Gees (please note, no hyphen in their name - if you're gonna bag a band, at least get that much right) had their first #1 in the 60s (waaaaaay before disco), had many hits in between then and the 'Saturday Night Fever' thing, and if it weren't for the "disco backlash" that you wankers carried way over the top, you might have heard some of the Bee Gees' hits post-disco. Ask the folks in the UK (who got over the whole "Bee Gees = disco" crap years ago). Equating The Bee Gees solely with their "disco" days (and really, what the f*ck is the difference between disco in the 70s, and dance music these days) is ridiculous, and shows an incredible narrow-mindedness. Yes, the world was overloaded with disco music in the 70s, and the Bee Gees having 5 songs in the top 10 at once didn't do them any favours when the backlash occurred, but they were making hits pre-disco, and they made hits post-disco. Just because they had the ability to tap into what the current culture was wanting, and give it to them, don't hold it against them now. NO other band has had the longevity of the Bee Gees (who would still be going now, had Maurice not died). The simple fact of the matter is that if the Bee Gees had not been successful at what they did, then they would have faded into the ether years ago. Alice Cooper and George Martin are Bee Gees fans...as are many other people you wouldn't expect (click the link). The Bee Gees were more than their disco days...so everyone get the f*ck over it! :149:

BTW, everyone is free to dislike any band they choose - I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with misinformation, however.

I can see three just to my right...I'm sure I do some damage if I swung them around a bit. :p

I'd just like to clarify something - I'm not a huge fan of disco myself, and aside from some of their trippy early 60s stuff, they're some of my least favourite Bee Gees songs. It's just the whole "The Bee Gees ARE disco!" attitude that gets up my nose. It'd be like you hating The Beatles cause you think their earlier songs are sappy.

The blades aren't live (well, the little knife is, but let us not speak of that:tsk: ), so the best you're going to do is inflict some nasty bruising.

:biglaugh: Chrispy did warn you...

I just realised I didn't actually reply to the OT (sorry Dru!). I'm not a fan of "popular" music these days, although as others have pointed out, there is still good music being made if you take the time to look for it. But to be honest, most of the time I can't be bothered.

I admit that the commercialization of music has lead to a 'target audience' mentality with music (rather than purely creative or emotional). But I don't think it's made music worse. It's just changed its purpose a bit. It's not dead, it's different. (And I must say, some of the new songs are pretty catchy...)

There's still a lot of excellent music being produced these days. (There was a lot of bad music being made in the 60s/70s too :p We just tend to forget about it, as we'll forget about the bad music of today). And I agree with Bouncing Ball, that Trance/Techno/House is booming and some very, very good stuff is coming from it. (There's crap too...)

Meogi's List of Recent Bands that have made rediculously good music!
1) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers *Wildflowers, The Last DJ (hey, could that album be relevant to our discussion!?)*
2) Infected Mushroom (Listen to this stuff)
3) Radiohead
4) Nirvana
5) Dave Matthews Band (Crush - Listen to this song damnit!)
6) Gigi D'Agostino
7) AFI
8) Bad Religion

I dunno, I just love most music. :D
