When I hired people I would do a first pass in about 15 seconds each. Bad formatting, bad writing and spelling errors was an automatic reject. Another immediate reject was too many jobs in to short a period. I wanted to hire people who would be around say at least 2-3 years. I remember a resume where the applicant had not lasted a year in multiple recent jobs.

Those that made it past the first pass were fast reviewed for something related to what I was looking for. A resume had to quickly signal "I have what you're looking for" which of course meant that the applicant took the time to do a specific resume when needed.

Today of course, there's automated screening but I assume that the same basics apply but I'd research how to write an effective resume in 2024.

You live in canada? do they have something like vocational rehabilitation? If you have a disability, and they offer that it's worth looking into. I have used voc rehab here in the US it's really helpful. Not only did they write my resume for me but also taught me how to write one, how to do job interviews, and provided me with a job coach to help grasp the job once I got it. They also provided me with testing to help with accommodations. They also have opportunities for providing funding for college and for teaching life skills related to jobs and independent living. I don't know how it is in canada but maybe they have places like that which could help you.

Are you still located in Edmonton? There should be some sort of local employment service to help people with resume preparation, and identifying employers who really need employees like you.

A lot of rejection is typical in job searching, don't let it get you down. My local resources helped me tailor my resume for the roles I wanted and also identified a few ways I was unknowingly shooting myself in the foot!

If you have interest in getting started in IT or Cybersecurity I have a colleague who recently got employed from Alberta after applying for free training at NPower Canada which is available to underemployed Albertan youth.

I kind of found out that it's really pretty much like an odds game, you just shotgun everything you possibly can and eventually you'll probably run into somebody that will take you on board.

It's very important to follow up on your apps and resumes. Not all employers will reach out to every candidate. Following up shows you're hungry and most companies like that.

In my 20's, I ended up just working through temp agencies, where eventually the employer would hire me once they saw I could work.. The interview process was minimal, it's more like they just send you to places to test you out. However, these types of jobs can be hard, and in my case, I rarely worked with that many english speakers.. Or if they did speak some english, there wasn't much I had in common with them. But I just worked in that fashion to try and prove myself. Which usually involved really keeping my mouth shut, because when I was temp, I could be dismissed very easily

And I'm not saying you have to go that route, but if you can't find nothing better, it might be worth a try at least.

I was told that as well, that I didn't follow up enough. Probably good advice, I guess
