I guess the way I see it, if there wasn't an afterlife and a reason to do something with one's life buyond working, paying taxes, and dieing, the problems one has to deal with just to keep on living aren't worth the hassle. in other words, I'd rather be dead then live in this problem plagued planet.
One of my favorite books in the Bible is the book of Ecclesiastes. In ch. 6 verses 3-5, it states : If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, however many they may be, but his soul is not satisfied with good things, and he does not even have a proper burial, then I say, "Better the miscarriage than he, for it comes in futility and goes into obscurity. It never sees the sun and it never knows anything; it is better off than he."
Now, don't get me wrong, I am not trying to state that that is the absolute proof that God, Heaven, or Hell, exist although I do believe they exist and have other avenues of trying to prove their existence. I do believe however, that we could not properly describe heaven or hell in a physical sense since they they are not physical places and that attempts at describing heaven and hell in the Bible are just ways for God to describe to us as finite physical beings the best way to get a grip on the concept of what these places are.
These are just some personal thoughts I have on the subject at hand. It's just something to think about.
Sincerely.
