Buddhism is more a psychotherapeutic modalaty than a religion, IMHO. It's aim is to reduce suffering.

True religion, it seems to me, is a claim of ontological truth.

This doesn't seem like what modern atheists mean by atheism. Atheism isn't a world view any more than theism is.

Buddhism is composed of several ontological truth claims, the first and most important one being how Buddhists understand "suffering", and what they believe causes said suffering.
