Hindu Attire

Another thread "What shall I do?" which started to delve into Hindu clothing and attire inspired me to start this thread.

Any discussion or insights on Hindu attire, temple attire, etc, is welcome!

I will start first.

For sometime I wanted to add to my attire the black cap as shown:

This is not the RSS black cap (as seen in the background) but a taller cap which was worn by some Maharashtrian and Telegu Brahmins, but others as well. Depicted here is of course the hero Hedgewar. That is the cap.

I cannot find it in US, Canada. Nor on the internet. But I want one. Anyone can help?

Aup can ship you one, right Aup?

As for temple, I just try to do what the locals do, other than that I always wear Hindu dress, not t-shirt and jeans like some do here.

You really feel like a lady in this. Buuuut there is soooo much ways to wear it...

When I am on "pujari duty" in my home or in another hindu home, I always wear my saree (very simple, no decoration or embroidery) Tamil style.

Salwar kameez is also very comfortable clothes.
But it is NO USE to even try to buy some in the west, even by internet. We are really getting crooked on the prices. I have bought several salwar kameez in the small local markets in Mumbai, for what, 200 /rs each ? If I had to buy the same in France, it would cost me around 60 - 100 eur ( ~5000 - 8000 /rs)
That's completely crazy...

So what you are saying is, if and when I visit India I should buy clothes?

Do any of you dress in these types of clothing for everyday attire? Not gonna lie some of the clothes for men look nice.

At my wedding I had to wear a white topor or conical cap with balls hanging from the sides, like the one shown below. That's not me however, that us some other "whitey" like me.

I love Saris. I've never really worn one "correctly" though. I wear salwar kamiz or kurta when I got go temple.

However, my husband (in a moment of really adorable 'showering devotion on my Hindu wife') bought me an unstitched sari.

The fabric is stunning and I'm going to get it tailored before I visit my friends in September. I need to practice wrapping it so I get it right for my temple visits during Navratri. I'm excited.

Is the hat you're talking about called "Gandhi cap"? I know millions of Hindu's wear those throughout the streets of India.

By the way, are you sure you aren't confusing the cap from the traditional muslim cap that very in height.

I am refering to the black and tall cap worn by one of my heroes of all time and greatest of Hindus the veerly Keshav Baliram Hedgewar (April 1, 1889 – June 21, 1940) the founding Sarsanghachalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

It is not a muslim cap. But it also not be a typical cap worn by very many Hindus because it might only be worn by a certain family of Brahmins. But actually I have seen non-brahmins wear it too, once I attended a Hindu Ramraj meeting in the US wear there were a couple of honored elderly RSS heroes at that meeting where we lined up to pass by a touch their feet in honor of their heroic efforts.

But there was gentleman in the audience who wore that cap in honor of Doctor Hedgewar. And Hedgewar's portrait was front in center framed and garlanded.

I want that cap. I do not care if it is old fashioned. But I cannot find it! Once I do, I will wear it to some Hindu events proudly.

Here is a descendent of Shabari who gave berries to Lord Ram. You see her dressed in her tribal attire.

Maybe you can try and make your own?
I don't know how to make hats but it doesn't look too difficult. Maybe go to a hatter and ask them to make one?

So the question is, what style would you call this, and would you go to the temple dressed such?

Definetly you would go to the Maharaja's Place. In the accompany of your brother.

The White cap you mentioned is worn by us, Maharashtrians. Vidarbha people wear it, not the west Maharashtrians. That isn't Gandhi Cap. We use black cap as well. It's used by konkani Brahmanas . Konkan is a place which was protected by Parashuram from sea-God, it is his beautiful creation.

During the week when I go to temple after work, I wear whatever I wore to work. Sometimes it's nice business casual, or jeans with a polo shirt or open collar shirt. On weekends for temple I usually wear a dhoti and a collared shirt, or a nice pullover.

I don't know what the style is called but it looks highly formal to me. The only time I ever saw a woman dressed anywhere near that formal was a woman during a special puja to celebrate her because she was a mother-to-be. I'm not an expert but I believe it is reserved for weddings and other very special occasions.
