Don't you recognize the old layout of many many years ago? I kinda missed it, honestly. :)
This isn't the old layout.
This is the old layout.

I don't like it, especially as I'm having to relearn and refind everything.
It seems like things were moved around to take many steps back.

It's taking me some getting used to as well. It's going to be optimized over the next few weeks as more feedback comes in, though. As I said earlier:

To reiterate two points of clarification from earlier:
  • The update is not for style. It was necessary to avoid closure of the forum. The old software had become too outdated and broken to sustain the forum.
  • The update is still ongoing. The owners are going to add more features and iron out some kinks. What you see now is just the elementary form of the update.

Feedback definitely helps. There's a thread for that specific purpose so that we have a reference to use when communicating with the owners:

And why are givers of ratings openly displayed now? Isn't that away to make things more highschoolerish and less mature for debate when it comes with a cheering section?

It's built into the current version of XenForo. I'm not sure whether there's a way to hide the usernames of members who have rated a post behind a button again, though.

It's a way to enhance the balkanization of RF.
But in what way is anything enhanced?
I see only loss.

OMG. What happened to RF, and when will it be switched back to normal? Will we have the option of switching it back to normal?

A necessary software update happened. The only other option was closure of the forum.

The update is still a work in progress, so hopefully the addition of features over the next few weeks can make things look more familiar.

Talk about a shock when I logged in a few minutes ago. I was wondering why RF was offline last night, but I'm guessing this update was the reason why.

I'm still getting used to it, myself. I miss the old ratings, for example, but the good thing is that admins can add and disable ratings. Past the teething issues, I'm just glad the forum didn't die because of the malfunctioning software it had.

If this update is what it takes to keep the forum from closing, then I'm okay with it, but I don't like sudden change at all.

Sudden changes like this tend to shock my brain and send it into a tailspin.

I see this kind of thing happen to a lot of websites. It appears to be favoring style over functionality.

It's less usable than the old style. Not as much information is visible at a time. It requires us users to have to scroll more, and as a general rule of UX / UI design, the more you have to scroll to get stuff done, the less user friendly the website (or app.)
Anybody here remember the "nn"? (netnews reader on unix) Best functionality, zero style. 40 years old and I'd still use it over the current or previous site. (Folding tree view, lets you fold away the off-topic threads and it's easier to (re)view a single thread without scrolling or paging.)
