How does your religion view masturbation?

It would totally go against the notion that to be spiritually advanced, sexual appetite has to be discarded, wouldn't it?

I think the person who seeks a relatively advanced spirituality, but combined with remaining in the world (as opposed to, say, retreating to a monastery) should give serious consideration to retaining an active sex life.

I suspect there would be challenges -- problems with significantly advancing spiritually while wanking like a pro. But I think anyone who managed those problems would be much better off spiritually in the end, than a person who denied the sexual part of life.

Coincidentally, I'm struggling with the idea of 'spiritual progression' at the moment.
The idea seems like a trap to me (I think anyway :)).
Is it a mistake to seek spiritual advancement?
I'm wondering if it might be better to come to understand the depth of my ignorance and come to terms with it?
What do you think?

Maybe I'm a godless heathen but I don't see anything wrong with it. I don't think God cares about my sexual habits.
If you are sure that your parents don't care much if you will masturbate in front of their eyes any day, Means.. if you can easily masturbate in front your parents eyes, than of course your "Omnipresent supreme parent" also doesn't care much for your sexual habits, or masturbation.

Know it your self,
or realize it your self.

Do you think its OK to masturbate in front of parents eyes ? If NO, than just think of the one who is omnipresent supreme parent. :)

I'm kind of in between religions right now, but I figure it sure beats, no pun intended, sleeping around just to get a sexual release.

I have a take on that, but no one else seems to entirely agree with me.

First, the mystical experience that is most often associated with enlightening a person is like a breeze. There is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- we can do to raise or lower that breeze. It comes and goes entirely of its own.

Please note there can be no spiritual progression if that experience is indeed like a breeze. You cannot progressively raise or lower a breeze. You cannot make one more or less likely to happen. A spiritual novice, and a person who has, say, practiced a meditative technique for 30 years, are on identical terms, in this light.

Next, and very important, there is no path to a breeze! In this final sense of the breeze metaphor, every religion is the same: Every religion is entirely worthless as a guarantee that the mystical experience will come to us. Again, there is no path to a breeze!

Second, we ourselves are like people living in houses who, for the most part, keep their doors and windows firmly closed. When the breeze comes, it cannot enter our houses to refresh us because our doors and windows are shut against it.

Here, at last, something like spiritual progress is possible. But only in this sense, we can work assiduously to open as many windows and doors as we can manage, so that, if the breeze finally comes, it can come in to refresh us. So, here, we can progress from, say, opening first one window, then the next, and so on. But we still cannot make the breeze happen. We can only become ready to receive it, if it does happen.

Make any sense to you, Stephen?

Yes it does actually.
I like the way you put it.

When it comes to matters spiritual I recognize that I know almost nothing. My problem (one of them anyway) is that I don't believe that anyone else does either.

But it seems to me that I live in a breezy place, whenever I open my curtains the breeze is there. There's 2 things going on here.
1. I believe in the breeze
2. I accept that countless other people feel the breeze too but I don't accept they know what it is. Claimed knowledge in this regard seems to be a stick. I'm not gone on sticks.

I think if I were to get a notion that I knew the breeze then I would build a tower of pride around myself. That would do me sod all good.

On the other hand, I think if I could manage to say, 'you know what, I have no idea where that breeze is coming from but I like to feel it on my face' I would be better off.

Spiritual advancement seems to be about pulling down the window, closing the curtains and turning to the fire to brush up on my notes so that I might dazzle at the spiritually advanced party.
I read a passage written by a Buddhist psychoanalyst recently which said that of her clients, other buddhists were the most passive aggressive. I found that very interesting.

You had another thread recently about enlightened people. I said that I don't believe there is such a thing and further, that if there were, I don't imagine I would like them because they would lack angst.

I think I want to be as human as I can, warts, faults and flaws. I am deeply imperfect and I don't want to improve. I just want to feel the breeze.

That was quite a ramble - but what do you think?

So, do you really believe, Chinu, old chap, that Ultimate Reality is fairly said to be a parent?

I don't think God is akin to a parent in the sense you are using it also I don't think that it's a good analogy to compare something that is private/personal like sexuality to showing it off anywhere. Playing with your analogy though, I take it you would have no problems having sex in front of your parents with a loved one, right? Same concept to me.

Would you please elaborate on what you mean by "a reason to live"?

How does sex present problems to the betterment of life?

I am being over dramatic but I am just saying that sex is becoming the main goal in life now. It is becoming an accomplishment of some kind(which it is not)

quote=Vinayaka;3467661]In Hinduism we don't have "Do this, don't do that!" set rules. We have guidelines, and overindulgence in anything would be considered an unhealthy balance. Too much food, too much TV, too much yoga, etc.

In this case, avoidance would be only truly applicable in the case of monks, (sadhus, yogis, sannyasins, swamis, in Hinduism). But for regular people not choosing the path of renunciation, moderation and guidance from elders would be recommended.

One difference I see in Hinduism and in Buddhism is this monastic path. Often there are two very distinct sets of guidelines depending on which path a devotee is on. a householder does not need to (nor should he, or she) follow the stricter regimen meant for renunciates. And also the opposite is true. No monk should be acquiring wealth, etc.

What would you consider to be too much masturbating?

How does your religion view masturbation? Is it inherently wrong in all accounts? I've heard Christians attempt to dodge this by saying they can masturbate without lusting which I suppose is possible but seems...complicated.

Masturbation in Buddhism...

Evil? No. Good? No. It just is, but with the notion that it does distract you from the nature of reality. While the act of masturbation itself is just physical phenomena, it is the desire and intent behind it that is considered to be a mental defilement. Something that will likely keep you trapped to Samsara. I do believe that its karmic effect is lesser than that of an intercourse, though, but still purposeless.

As there is no god, no cosmic force is 'hating' on you for masturbating, it simply has consequences in karmic continuum: maybe you find some fantasies that you rather would not have thought of, maybe it gets addictive, but most certainly it causes distance between you and state of enlightenment.

Sin? No. Bliss? Certainly not so.

The Guru Granth Sahib-ji doesn't specifically address the subject of masturbation but it does teach against the 5 Evils, one of which is Lust (Kaam). Masturbation is typically born from some sexual desire which is often left unchecked. One of the main requirements for Sikhs is to check their desires and channel them towards the Naam (name of God) and towards healthy worship. Otherwise such desire takes over a person to the point of them being blind towards God and remembrance of Him.
