How important is your ancestry in paganism?

maybe I should stop being polite and say what I really think. Like 'it is beyond belief that a human mind can possess such rot'. Would that be better?

You're not being polite, you're being condescending and think no one can tell. It says much that response is your default and that, per your question, you don't know how to voice your truthful opinion or know the difference in whether it's bias based or factual based.

It serves no worthwhile purpose in a discussion if one is not going to add truthfully.

This is a question I expect a lot of different answers for. Afterall there is no real codification of Paganism so you know expecting a uniform answer would be silly. I have had several people on several occasions tell me that the only valid way to worship any pagan deities is to worship those your ancestors may of worshiped. This poses a problem for me since I like deities from all kind of different paths.

What do you think?

In my experience my ancestry has no effect whatsoever in which gods respond to my approaches. Given that I have Norse ancestry, I tried approaching Thor first; I got no response. Instead it was first one Greek deity, then another, then another which attracted my interest. I have no Greek ancestry. Those who say people 'ought to' or 'must' worship the gods of their ancestors are being narrow-minded; they assume an approach which works for them will work for everyone else when it does not. Indeed, such people often have to go far back into their family tree to find those who kept the Old Gods - ignoring plenty of more recent ancestors who were Christians or Muslims or even atheists (this being the majority of cases) etc.

So you've filled in your religion field incorrectly. Was that deliberate?
I am not trying to win anyone to any religion. I was asked questions about Jesus and the 10 Commandments and I answered as best I could. I do not know how Bahai came to be on my profile. I requested it be removed when I found out it was on there. However allow me to state where I stand on religious beliefs. I believe they all exist for a reason. And various people choose various religious beliefs according to which they are drawn to. I do not attend any particular church. But I do believe the Bible being the Word of God. All of it. So what does that make me?

One has to type in their religion for it to appear on their profile page. It wouldn't be selected by RF and can't be added by anyone without knowing the log-in for that account.

You can change it yourself by clicking on your name in the upper right corner, then go into "personal details". Revise the info and save.

If by bible you're including the NT and consider Christ to be your saviour as well then it's obvious what category you'd generally in.

I think all religious beliefs are in existence for a reason. So what is that called. The fact I believe the Bible as the Word of God does not necessarily mean I agree with how it has been used for selfish gain in the area of religion.

I said "if," which doesn't say that you do or don't. You can simply choose to state what you are instead of playing in vagaries.

What are some examples of the reasons you think exist and to which religions do they apply?

I am no particular 'religion' per se''. iI believe in the Bible. That is my stance. And I consider that all religions exist for a reason. God knows where I stand and why.

My reasons are between me and God.

And do you believe in the validity of other religions and deities? Or do you maintain a "one true" view of one text and deity?

I didn't ask for your reasons. You stated religions have their reasons, I asked what those are. And if you're not going to discuss them, why bring them up and what purpose does suggesting them serve if you refuse to clarify your assertion? How are others to respond, what's the take away?

I believe in God the Creator. And the Bible given as the way to Truth. Anyone believing this and reading the Bible seeking Truth, will be led to Truth as the Word of God states. All religions are in existence because God allowed them to be. My religion, if you want to call it that, is The Holy Bible.

I have neither the desire or care to name it for you. It just seems you like to play coy for no clear purpose. If you adhere to a particular text and deity to be true and ultimate, there isn't much sense for you skirt around. Just sayin'.

Some things are best left unsaid.

I was asked my 'religion'.

Which is to be expected if one is going to participate in a site called religious forums and volunteers that they seem a particular text and deity to be true with all others supposedly "allowed" to exist by the persons chosen deity.

And why claim there are reasons for other religions yet decline to clarify what those are?

People typically do not bring up things they don't want to discuss nor frequent places where the topic(s) occur.

I feel like this thread should probably be moved to "Same Faith Debates". I saw this ****storm brewing as soon as I saw the title. Ancestry is generally a very uneasy topic for most Pagans, since everyone is very charged about it.
