How Would You React If At The End Of The Day Atheism Was Right?

Well if god wasnt there, id just do whati would want to make me have fun. Pardus, very true, but i dontcare overly.

9-10s_Penguin, i would aim to make it negative, i'd do it for myself, to have fun, maybe not bad.
If you have "fun" doing negative things, then I think you're not doing "fun" correctly.

To answer the OP, it wouldn't affect me a bit. I am a practicing Buddhist now, and will remain one. I fit most of the definitions of atheism anyway, so no big deal at all.

I'd try not to gloat too much.

It would be fascinating to see, once the promise of reward and fear of punishment were removed, how many people would develop/maintain an internalized moral code of social integrity vs how many would completely fly off the handle in hedonistic self-interest and debauchery once the external constraints were removed.

I suspect the Hippies, Greens, Socialists, Liberals, counter-culturists & al would notice little change and continue to conduct themselves well, advocating their traditional social issues, while the Conservatives and right-wing crowd would find the rug pulled out from under them and wind up flailing in the wind.

As I have already discovered that Atheism is right, nothing at all would change for me. I am an Athiest/Agnostic/Naturalist/Skeptic as is, and I, personally do not cheat on my wife, I don't steal, I rarely lie, I don't murder people, I don't wish, or do, harm to others. I have absolutely no fear of any otherworldly retribution, and treat others as I would, in turn wish to be treated as part of the bargain in my social contract with the world around me.

A decent person who is not a psychopath certainly does not need a cosmic boogeyman threatening ill consequences to treat others in a humane and human manner. For those who state, and I have heard this repeatedly, that they would go off the deep end and commit all kinds of heinous acts if they found out there was no God, then I would think you have to ask yourself. . . "What kind of person am I?" Especially in light of the fact that those evil, Godless athiests already act in an overwhelmingly socially conscientious and reasonable manner, without fear of retribution in the afterlife?

So why don't you just do what you want now?

If your beliefs are right, you're going to get smacked down for not really following them (unless i understood the result of our discussion so far), and if atheism is right it won't hurt you.

Don't pretend to be something you are not, the divine will know, and i don't believe they would look kindly on pretending and you'll just be unhappy living a lie.

I dont do what i want to because im a hindu! This isnt true, this isnt what will happen, i just wanted to see what people wanted to say, ok? The result of this discussion is to see how someone would react if this happend, not to tell someone there fake and living a lie. Jeez! Calm down man, what you say makes no sense. Your right, atheism wont hurt me, i was just messing around, no need to get all arguementative about it!

If i was proved right that there was no God i'd be curious to see what would become of organisations dedicated to worship.
Personally i'd be satasfied knowing i didn't dedicate myself to nothing which ive done in previous instances.

How would you react. Id be slightly annoyed, then id do all the bad stuff i want.

I'm an atheist already. I'd jump for joy at this confirmation, and continue to do all the good stuff I want.

I'm dedicated to being a good person because goodness is rewarded in this life, every step of the journey. It has nothing to do with the presence or absence of divine beings. Enlightened are they who realize this.

Really? My whole world would fall apart, because my whole world is my desire to know Him, love Him, and serve Him.
My life is centered around the desire to know, love, and serve God as well. That is what I wake up with. That is what I go to sleep with. But for me, to know, love, and serve people (and the rest of creation) is to know, love, and serve God.

What you have done unto the least of these you have done unto me. [SIZE=-1](Matthew 25:31-46)

For me, the two greatest commandments - "Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and all thy soul and all thy mind." and "Love thy neighbor as you love yourself." are functionally one and the same. Therefore, the question of whether God exists or whether atheism is right is not so important.

I feel sorry for the people who are motivated by fear of punishment or hope of reward. They are apparently suffering through this life, constantly acting in a way that is different from how they actually want to act, all based on a gamble that may or may not pay off in the end.

One of the most ignored parts of Christianity, and my belief in it was one of the things that drove me away from the religion.

I believe that teaching your child a religion is a bad thing, you should be teaching your child right and wrong, if they choose a religion they will become true followers not groomed followers.

The OP displays what i believe to be the effect of such grooming, following something "just because..."

Many groomed followers are the worst example of the religion, like Christians who judge others.

My reasoning for this is that if you actively choose something you are more likely to pick something that you completely believe.

As with 90% of my posts, i ask you to please prove me wrong.

If science could somehow prove that God did not exist. Than on that day, I hope that the believers tell science where to stick it and believe in God none the less.

So you mean the status quo?

No. I have more trust in the capabilities of humans than that. I feel people should think for themselves regardless of what is said to be known.

When I was first told about the solar system. I did not just accept what the teacher said. I had to run down to the elementary library after school and began to read all the books they had on the subject. At the end of the school year I finally accepted it as true. I try to consider all possibilities presented I can. But in the end I always leave the final assessment up to myself. It is not about right or wrong it is about what is important to you

Here I think Hypatia says it better than me.

Beats me. But then having been an atheist myself, maybe that puts me in a position where it wouldn't be an unknown for me either.
